How do you hit irons properly? I can hit my driver fairly consistently (190-240 yds) straight and put the ball where I want it, but when I get to the irons I can hardly hit anything. The ball is either a low zinger or a complete pull/shank. I hit a 9 iron as far as the 6 iron about (90-130). Is the swing different when you hit the irons?

  1. The swings aren't different, but the how far you stand away from the ball changes and where the ball is placed in your stance changes.  You don't want to stand as far from the ball with an 8 iron as you would with driver.  They are not the same length.  Ball position would be different for both.  A driver should be played right off the heel of your front foot while it should be toward the middle of your stance for an 8 iron.  Maintain the flex in your knees(spine angle) and hit the ball.

  2. The swing should be basically the same.  The difference is when you're driving off the tee, the club head of your driver should hit the ball slightly on the upswing, in hitting an iron off a fairway is to hit the ball first and then the ground or just at the bottom of your downswing.  ie.  Your divot should be ahead of where the ball was sitting before you hit it.  Try this drill on the range - place a tee on the ground directly in front of your ball.  Try to hit the tee rather than the ball.  If hitting off a mat use a dime.

A teaching pro suggested this drill to me.

  3. THIS MIGHT WORK... PICK A SPOT ON THE BACK OF THE BALL... WATCH THE CLUB HIT IT, SOMEONE ELSE WILL WATCH WHERE IT GOES... IT'S EASY TO FIND WHEN IT ON THE GREEN!!!

    "HIT 'EM STRAIGHT"

  4. here’s nothing in golf quite like making pure contact. If you’ve never felt an absolutely pure golf shot, then you must keep reading, because I’ve got a method that will allow you to achieve this magical feeling! If you have experienced this sensation, then chances are it’s the main reason that you’re hooked on this great game. And if you love golf, I’m sure you’d like to learn to make that pure contact more consistently.

If you want to increase your ballstriking ability, you need to understand how to rotate your hips properly in the golf swing. Most amateur golfers rotate their hips too far during the backswing, which makes it difficult for them to get their hips to open up to the target at impact, a key component of a successful swinG.All good players have one position in the golf swing that’s similar despite their very different-looking swings. This position is impact. Good players retain their wrist-c**k through the hitting area so that their left wrist is bowed and the right wrist is flexed (for right-handed golfers), and both hands are slightly in front of the golf ball at the strike. Contrary to popular belief, the arms and elbows, from address to the top of the backswing, travel only a short distance. This is a reality few recreational players grasp. Most choose to believe that the arms and elbows travel a very great distance, and this is what provides power in the golf swing. These golfers are drastically misinformed. Power isn’t generated by swinging the arms and elbows out and away from your body. In fact, just the opposite is true. Read on to learn why and how to develop a more compact, more efficient and more productive swing.

    good luck!

  5. no- use the same swing for all clubs.  Golf's hard enough trying to have 14 different swings for 14 different clubs.  your problem sounds like ball placement.

    A general rule is

Driver- inside left (for righties) instep

fairway woods- parallel to left armpit

2,3,4 irons- parallel to left pec muscle

    middle irons- center of stance

    wedges- slightly behind center

ground your club when you step up to a shot.  with the club lying flat, that'll show you where the bottom of your swing is, and you can set up to that.

    hope this helps!
