Golf latest; Louis Oosthuizen says yes to Africa and no to Hawaii
Charity starts from home and so should the tour. This is why Louis Oosthuizen has decided to start the next year with Africa Open, which will be staged in South Africa.
The conqueror of St Andrews made a public appearance on Thursday and made it official that he will be part of the Africa Open’s field.
He said, "I decided not to go and play the two tournaments in Hawaii because that won't leave me with enough off time before the start of the new season. I have never played in the Africa Open so I am really looking forward to it. And the conditions are
likely to be windy, which I like."
The South African had an invitation for two championships in Hawaii, but did not give them priority; as they will not leave him time to practice for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which will take place in second-last week of January. Therefore, he decided
to add Africa Open in his schedule. The tournament carrying a purse of 1 million Euros will take place at East London Golf Club from January 6-9.
However, the Open Champion does not have a clue about the course. According to him, “I played the East London Golf Club course as an amateur, I do not remember too much about it. I remember the 18th and second holes, and I also remember it as being a fair
test with plenty of birdie opportunities, but also a lot of bogey opportunities."
Oosthuizen will be joined by Retief Goosen and Charl Schwartzel. Goosen is two-time Open Champion and he recently finished as a runner-up in South African Open last week, whereas Schwartzel finished in top five at NedBank Challenge and South African Open,
giving Oosthuizen some serious competition.
The news has been stamped as official that Louis Oosthuizen will be teeing off at the Africa Open, which has been co-sanctioned by Europeans and Sunshine Tour. A victory at the event will earn a title at each tour. It seems like the veteran is getting wiser
with time, after all getting two titles from one victory is a clever decision.
