Golf legend Greg Norman advises Rory McIlroy to avoid listening to media – Golf news
Golfing legend Greg Norman has advised the 21-year-old Rory McIlroy to stop listening to media following the Irish’s meltdown at the first major of the season, the Masters.
McIlroy went into the final round of the Masters with a four shot lead, but pressure got to him in the final round. Making a mess on the par-3 12th hole, McIlroy posted a final round of 80 to tie for 15th at Augusta. No one would really
know how to tackle these situations better than Norman as 15 years ago he himself blew a six-shot advantage at the Masters in 1996.
“He sort of just said to me, from now on, don't read golf magazines, don't pick up papers, don't watch the Golf Channel,” McIlroy said. “But it's hard not to. Obviously you want to keep up to date with what's going on. But you can't let other people sort
of influence what you're thinking and what you should do.”
This sort of incident occurred with Norman when he was 41 and had already gone through many major championship heartbreaks. The only player Norman had to beat then was the talented Sir Nick Faldo. For a player as young as McIlroy, this would take some time
to recover. As he failed to maintain his lead in the final round, the Masters this year was won by the South African Charl Schwartzel.
The good thing is that McIlroy has moved on from what happened a few weeks ago and is now looking at brighter things. He is all set to defend his title at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Golf Club in North Carolina this weekend. That golf course
has great memories for him as he made a third round 66 to get in a strong position for the final round. Posting a 62 in the final round, McIlroy claimed his first PGA Tour victory by four shots.
