  1. dont be nervous and just do what the guy says.

  2. How good do you want to be?  I've been playing for 8 years, never had a lesson, and shoot in the low to mid 80's range.  I've received tips from guys on the range that seemed knowledgeable.  One guy showed me the overlapping grip.  Another guy just reitterated some things I already knew which helped out.  Everyone needs a reminder every now and then.  Other than that, I subscribe to Golf Magazine and tried some of the drills in the magazine.  I've shot 3 over for 9 holes multiple times.  If I played more full rounds(I usually just play 9 the majority of the time) my scores may be even better than that.

  3. Make sure you warm up before the lesson starts.  Stretch, hit some balls on the range.  Be able to briefly explain where your challenge is (i.e. specific clubs, type of shot (i.e. slice, hook, etc.), or goal of session).

In 30 minutes there's only so much you can cover.  I'd say focus on trying to learn one or two things.  If something doesn't make sense, ask.

If they have video analysis, it's probably worth it.

  4. When I started out I had three lessons, he went through the grip the stance and the swing. This helped enormously, and I am know thinking of having some more to keep my game going the right way.

  5. its about being relaxed firstly, he should firstly see how you grip the club, its about balance and not trying to sway and keep your  front arm straight and use the wirsts! your doing the right thing by havin lesson first as you shouldnt pick up any bad habits and christ at £19 every half an hour he should end up givin ya 5 handicap. he must be the club pro at that price.

  6. Good idea to start on the driving range but don't wear youself out.

Take a notebook with you and after the lesson write down what you remember.

Don't try and cover too much in one lesson: focus on a particular aspect of your game (driving, chipping, putting) and put the work in for the next week or so.

Having a lesson every month or so is a good idea if you want to keep improving. If you don't think you are getting value for money try another pro.

Books and DVD's are good sources but don't try and sort out everything at once: focus on your weakest skill.

  7. If it is your first lesson listen to what you are being told. Don't worry about where the ball goes and how far it goes, of if you completely miss the ball. Try to relax, loosen up, and let go of any tension. Concentrate more on your body positioning than hitting the ball. Do not try to hit the ball as far as you can. Use between 50% to 75% of your power. When you start off you will be developing your muscle memory, so if you slow down your swing you will be able to sense more about the position your body is taking.
