Question:

Golf lovers: What's so interesting about Golf? I don't mean to be rude but it's just putting a ball in a hole?

It's hot, you get sunburnt, you have to walk a lot, it's frustrating to watch, and making golf fields destroys the environment. AND the game is all about hitting a ball into a hole - something that children like to do. I find it hard to see golf as a sport. I don't mean to be insulting, but I'm seriously curious: what is so interesting about golf that people sacrifice the environment for such an seemingly uninteresting activity?

Thanks.

  1. Golf is the only game that I can think of which actually gets more difficult, as you get better, due to the handicapping system. This also allows someone of average sporting ability (like me) to compete with brilliant younger players and actually have a chance of occasionally winning. Although many golfers play on the same course for literally years, every game is different due to the weather, the wind, the placement of the tee box (where you hit from) and the placement of the pin (hole).

As for the environment, I'm no expert, but our course is a haven for wildlife, especially Koalas, ducks, tortoises etc and utilises stormwater and recycled sewage for all of it's irrigation.

We have members, both male and female whose ages range from 7 or 8 years, through to their 80's and the friendships forged on the golf course are friendships forged through a shared challenge often against the odds.

Finally, Golf is also the only game I'm aware of where you actually call a penalty against yourself if you make a mistake or break a rule so it is a great testiment to building character and integrity amongst it's followers.

  2. It's that crisp sound of a 200m drive strait sown the fairway, the gentle blob when you sink a 10 footer. It also has a lot to do with the social aspect of it chattin with your buddies over nine holes is a great way to make friends. It gets a lot better once you start playing not like an idiot.Try it, how else would you know!

  3. Tiger and Tom M deserves jmuch of the credit, but also your argument is that you have to walk. NO there are golf carts, and they are awesome. Also its your fault that you get sunburnt. JUST PUT ON sunscreen. Use SPF 75 if you really don't like getting burnt. I get burn more at a pool then when I play golf. Also the whole course is green. (eg trees, all that grass, the water life for water holes)  A football field is often all turf, and the electricity it uses pollutes. And there is no grass there to make oxygen(I do love the sport though. Football+Soccer) Minigolf may be for kids, but golf is not. I have been playing basketball+baseball(teeball) since I was 4 but did not start golf 'till I was about 13. Anyone could make your argument about any sport, if they had never tried it before.  Everyone has their own sport that they like.  Personally I say why is curling a sport. Many people may agree with me, and people may agree with you. If one doesn't like a sport. that person will make the same arguement that you did, but w/ the sport that they don't like.  Hope I helped.

  4. Each to their own! I also find golf boring, but some golf players will find (e.g.) Coding boring. What you find interesting may bore other people. I do agree golf is boring, but some people may like the skill of been able to put a tiny ball in a tiny hole at 50M away.

P.S. I had a dirty joke in mind when I read the bit about putting the ball in the hole! =P

  5. Basketball is about putting a ball in a hoop.

Baseball is about hiting a ball out of a park

Football is about running with a ball to a particualar area.

Soccer is about kicking a ball into a net.

    So.............you point is?

It's enjoyable and i love it. its not as easy as it looks, i'd like to see you try. and it is competivite, soicalble, and you can play it till ur like 100. its mentally challenging.

So stfu u stupid enviromentialist! if u are that concerned about the environment, then stop driving, stop buying any food that has gone though a factory and drink stream water since it is probabily distorying the environment when they pruify the water you drink.

  6. I thought all guys were interested in putting things into holes.  Seriously though, I agree with you - I don't get it.  I think a lot of guys who play golf do it so they can hang out with each other in a competitive environment (like football for the upper class), but I don't know why people would want to watch it.

  7. well basket ball is putting a ball in a ring u run and get sweaty

soccer is putting a ball between poles etc...........

    most sports a S****y

    fyi i don't like golf

  8. this idots aproach to a sport can be said about any sport, basketball, men in thier underwear putting a ball in a hole. Baseball, men chasing a little ball around, football, boneheads trying to kill each other, soccer, running around for 90 minutes to have a 0-0 draw. I do not think golf is a sport, rather a game. Golf is fun to watch when tiger is playing. Also, if you look at some courses, they do not destroy the environment, they add greeness to the area, inducing photosynthesis to the deserts and warmer areas.

  9. Because its just a relaxing game. How does it destroy the environment? it is grass and trees and any grass you kill by taking a divot is repaired by the course. When your good at golf it is very fun. And people who don't  play golf haven't ever experienced anything about golf like the perfect drive or that sweet birdie putt. I bet you haven't played a round of golf in your life
