Golf major championships witnessing new winners each time
The odd makers in the world of golf are in a state of confusion for the remaining two major championships of the year, especially when the last 15 majors witnessed different winners each time, including the last nine with the first-time winners.
Last week, Webb Simpson came out victorious from the field of the US Open at the Olympic Club and stunned the golf communities.
It has now become really difficult for the golf commentators to name a single player as the next ‘Tiger Woods’ when there is abundance of talent in the golfing world these days.
While talking to the media after the US Open victory, Simpson said that many young players turn professional early in their careers, following the footsteps of the legendary Woods, creating the influx of young players in the sport.
"I think the Tiger (Woods) effect of inspiring people to play at a younger age, and I think the access to golf has got so much bigger that the game is changing," Simpson said after his victory.
Last year, the US Open saw Rory McIlroy emerging as the second youngest player to win the major championship after Woods.
In addition to that, he registered a record score of a 16-under par to take the eight-stroke lead over his closest rival on the leaderboard. This year, he faltered badly and missed the cut at the Olympic Club.
When Darren Clarke won the 2011 British Open, the golf analyst started asking questions, "What happened to American golf?"
The reason behind asking the above question was the streak of six major wins by European players.
However, Keegan Bradley broke their streak with a win in the PGA Championship and joined the league of players who won the major championships in their rookie season.
Thereafter, Bubba Watson and Simpson won the Masters Tournament and US Open, respectively, to create a streak of three wins by the American players.
Therefore, the golf commentators and odd makers are in a baffled situation while talking about the upcoming major championships of the year.
By and large, it is now a tough challenge for golf communities to create favourite lists for any tournament in future.
