Golf news: BMW championship to start on September 9th
The BMW championship is scheduled to start from the ninth of September at Cog Illinois. This event will mark the semi-final of the FedEx cup and will determine the top five who will compete for the final. Now that Charley Hoffman has won at the Deutsche Bank championship, golf fans are eager for the next tournament of the FedEx Cup.
Where in the last play off, Hurricane Earl was a hindrance - this time it’s the heat. The caretakers of the Cog Hill Golf and Country Club have said that this seems to be the worst summer since 1995. They have even had to close the course for some modifications to alleviate the damage caused by the heat.
"It was just unending heat and humidity. We'd get 3 inches of rain and then immediately it would be 95 degrees through the night again. Some of the greens are barely a year old and take longer to recover, as they are still maturing. But we're in great shape now, and the forecast looks good for the week," said course superintendent Ken Lapp.
With temperatures soaring in the nineties everyday and very minute rainfall, humidity has truly engulfed the atmosphere. Looks like the golfers will not only have to compete amongst each other, but with the heat as well.
Last year, Tiger Woods won the BMW championship by eight shots after giving four continuous rounds of 68 or better. This was the fifth time Woods had been successful at the BMW championship. This success really made his way to win the FedEx cup for the second time in three years. This year even though the game doesn’t look much in favour of Woods, his performance at Boston TPC shows he is struggling.
Battling for his play-of-life and his No.1 ranking, Tiger birdied three of the last four holes on Monday, and thus was triumphant in securing his title. He finished with a three-under 68 to share 11th place at 10-under-par 274. This was sufficient to back off Phil Mickelson for a while. Phil holds the No.2 position and just required a top-four finish to replace Woods. Having various opportunities to become number one, Phil let go of this one as well. Not only was he unable to replace Woods, he didn’t play very well on the last day of the Deutsche Bank Championship. He had a birdie, a double bogey, two bogeys and a triple-bogey on the back nine en route and secured a 76 at the end. Instead of taking him forward, this score caused to him to land fourteen places behind tiger Woods. Defending his title at the Tour Championship, Phil Mickelson will also be struggling to be in the top five in the standings.
Also expected to be in the top five is Luke Donald. Scoring a 66 to land in third place at deutsche Bank, he is expected to be at number four in the FedEx cup points. In addition, Illinois alum Steve Stricker is expected to be third in points.
Winning the Deutsche Bank Championship, Charley Hoffman went up to the number two position on FedEx Cup points list. Victorious by five strokes, Charley carded six birdies on the back nine and 11 in his round, as he shot a nine-under 62. He came up to the tournament scoring record which was 262.
Also looking forward to the semi-final of the Ryder cup is hometown hero Kevin Streelman. His remarkable skills and amazing games have won the hearts of many. Kevin participating at Cog Hill will surely attract huge crowds. Doing well at Barclays, Streelman is excited to come home to celebrate and also of course make fellow ‘Chicagoers’ proud of him.
Chris Couch, Lucas Glover, Charles Howell III and Padraig Harrington started playing inside the top 70, however, due to poor performances, they were kicked out and will not be able to compete in the last two play-off events.
With not many days to go for the Ryder cup Final, players are really brushing up on their game for the championship on Thursday.
