Golf news: Chad Campbell disqualified in R2 of The Deutsche Bank Championship 2010
It is generally believed that change is constant and for good. From what we have seen in the PGA Tour rules, what they might be lacking is change. After Jim Furyk from The Barclays, Chad Campbell was asked to march out of the Golf Club from the Deutsche Bank Championship in R2.
Campbell’s disqualification took place just one week after The Barclays event. Being one quarter of the FedEx Cup, the event expelled Jim Furyk because he had failed to reach the play-off on time.
Campbell was handed the DQ because he had failed to register for the second quarter of the FedEx Cup 2010, the Deutsche Bank event. The 36-year-old stands at the 83rd place in the FedEx Cup rankings but somehow forgot that a player is supposed to register himself before playing any event.
The Viking Classic past champion realized that he hasn’t signed himself in for the event after playing the first round of the championship on Friday. On Saturday he was told that he cannot play further because of the DQ.
According to Campbell this was rather unexpected since one is least expected to make a careless mistake like that. He said that he was very shocked by what happened at the event but accepts full responsibility of the situation at hand.
As far as the rules are concerned, if a player hasn’t registered himself, he can’t play. Campbell reached the venue three days before the game. On Tuesday, Campbell practiced the grounds making the approx week and Friday he played the game. His first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship ended with one up 72.
According to the PGA vice president of rules and competition Mark Russell, Campbell’s DQ was rather a sad event and said that the fact that Campbell had been disqualified only because he failed to register himself was a distressing incident. Russell stated that he wasn’t very happy from what had happened but rules had to be followed. A player must make sure of his enrolment when he arrives on the site. If the player fails to recognize this beforehand, he is ineligible to compete in the tournament.
Talking about the previous disqualifications, Furyk said that Campbell’s disqualification stunned him the most.
Campbell’s disqualification has had a bad effect on his future game in this event. After the DQ, Campbell has dropped to a standing from where he won’t be able to play any event of PGA this season. Campbell being out of the Deutsche Championship is out overall and Furyk feels terrible for him. Furyk in his previous DQ fell from number 3 to number 9 in the play-off but Campbell won’t be able to qualify for the last-half of the FedEx Cup series at all.
After the Deutsche Bank handing the DQ to Campbell, many critics question the rules official. The rules official had been there when Furyk and Davis Love III had forgotten the registration. Before the players had teed off, the official was always there with the registration sheet in hand for the signature.
Furyk has the same views as critics; the 40-year-old says that if Campbell forgot his registration then it was the official’s responsibility to look out for Campbell. The officials however, defend themselves and blame it on the demanding tournament. Russell says that the PGA Tournament is not a regular tournament and with a tournament this demanding, officials can sometimes forget looking out for players and their registration.
Nonetheless, Campbell accepts full responsibility for the mishap and says this hasn’t ensued for the first time. When Campbell was on his way to the Sony Open in Hawaii, he realized he had never entered the tournament at all. One wonders if this has become Campbell’s new trend.
After Furyk was disqualified for The Barclays, the pro-am rule had been suspended for the remaining year. After Campbell’s disqualification, many golfers including Love, expect the enrolment rule to change for good.
