Golf news: Corey Pavin's wildcards won’t be part of the Tour Championship
Captain Corey Pavin was pretty satisfied with his Wildcard picks that he announced on September 7th. However, all three of them failed to qualify for the Tour Championship that will take place in Georgia from September 23rd. The biggest shock came from Tiger Woods, who finished fifteenth at the BMW championship, hence, failing to qualify for Tour Championship. Along with Woods, Pavin’s picks Rickie Fowler and Steven Cink are out of the FedEx cup race as well.
Poor Tiger has had a rough time this year, and it is a big shocker that the Tiger won’t be there to defend his title. He has not really been playing up to the mark after getting divorced from his wife Elin Nordegren. Apart from failing to win the FedEx cup, there is also news that Pavin is thinking of keeping Woods on the bench for the Ryder Cup. That is seriously bad news. World Number two Phil Mickelson thinks it is going to be ‘absolutely’ strange not having Tiger there. Woods, who hasn’t won a tournament so far this year, is really looking forward to the HSBC championship set to take place in China in fall, this year.
Woods announced that he will be practicing under Scott Foley, who is his new golf instructor. Woods will have an extra week before the Ryder cup. His fans are really hoping that Foley can bring out the old spark in Woods for Ryder.
Stewart Cink, who was seen critiquing the golf course didn’t come up with a satisfactory performance as well. Cink did not like Cog Hill on bit and ended up losing the tournament. He said that on the scale of one to ten, the course was a minus three.
Rickie Fowler, the youngest player in the Ryder cup didn’t qualify for the Tour championship either. Fowler, who is also the Rookie of the year, caught the media’s attention by not only his bright outfits but also by his selection for the Ryder team. Having an amazing year this year, it is not that disappointing for Fowler. Last year he finished in top ten twice, and this year he is selected for the Ryder cup. In comparison with Woods, loss of FedEx cup shouldn’t bother Fowler much, after a relatively successful year.
Apart from the players who aren’t in the FedEx cup anymore, all eyes are on Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar. These two seem to be in close competition to win the FedEx cup. Johnson won the BMW championship after shooting two amazing shots at the 17th. Dustin, who had a year of controversies and disappointments, struggled hard to get good news. He finished 9th at the Barclays and had a major setback with a 59th place finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
“It feels good,” said Johnson after his fourth victory on the tour. “I’ve had a lot of unfortunate situations on Sundays. I hit the ball good all day and it paid off. I drove it well and hit good iron shots.”
Johnson started the day with one point behind Ryan Moore, who was leading the third round. Pretty soon he found himself tied with the English player Paul Casey. Although Casey struggled a lot, things started going bad when a bad drive left him with a hard approach at 13 and finished short of the green and the golfer wasn’t successful to achieve a up and down. He then hit his approach at the 14th hole over the green, and could not get any closer than 15 feet missing the par out. Casey finished in second place.
Despite the fact that Matt Kuchar didn’t win the BMW Championship, he is still leading in FedEx points. He was sick all week; however, he still managed a 72 and landed at six under. Kuchar was victorious at the Barclays by coming in at 11th position at the Deutsche Bank Championship and 3rd at the BMW Championship.
With Tiger Woods out of the race of FedEx cup, it all leads up to the Tour Championship that will take place at the East Lake Golf Course to see who will take the cup and $10 Million dollars home.
