Golf news: Fire-breathing Liberty Flames capture 7th place at the VCU Shootout
The fiery battle for the top spot at the VCU Shootout ended on Tuesday for the Liberty Flames. The team played the third best round for the R3 and gave its best to burn up the leader board. At the VCU Shootout, Liberty carded a total of 290 with a 2 over
and put an end to the 54 hole event. The Flames’ heat, thus only managed to put them on the seventh spot after the finale.
As compared to round number one and two, Liberty managed to display a much lower score at the last round. However, a detailed study of the leader boards suggests that this trend is quite common. UNC Wilmington was the leader of the first round at the VCU
event but saw a seven stroke vanish on the par 72 course. The Seahawks managed an impressive 276 by carding a 12 under on Monday, which was followed by 298 10 under on the last day of the event. The team carded a score of 288, 276 and 298 in the three rounds.
The team Wake Forest was the only other team to finish in red at the 54-hole VCU event. A total of 863 was carded with a one under, leading the team to finish with the second best score. The team scored a 285 and then two back-to-back 298 in the three rounds
of the event. The team Demon Deacons were seen just a shot shy from victory at the event.
In three rounds, the Liberty team carded scores of 295, 291 and then its lowest 290. The lowest score carded by the Flames in its last round helped them to stay ahead of the team Virginia Tech, which finished at an obvious eight. Virginia Tech managed to
play a 13 over 877, holding the lead over Iowa State.
The Iowa State also managed to play a good game by carding a total of 878 with a 14 over. This team held the lead over the host team VCU who finished at the tenth place. The host team carded a total of 880 by scoring a 16 over.
A player always finds it easy to perform in a team. Max McKay finished the event by posting a second sub-par round. His game saw an end with a tie for the tenth place with a 216 in hands. His leader board score shows the score of 70, 75 and then a 71 in
the end. Before his last ten holes, McKay managed to play successive pars after which he carded only one additional par.
His game had been an intense mixture of bogeys and birdies. McKay in his full game collected three bogeys, a double bogey and then, to his delight, 5 birdies. He claimed his share on the tenth place because of his play at the 15th hole. McKay
posted a birdie on the par 5 hole, which allowed him to post a game of par 71 with a one under.
Only five golfers were able to break the 70 at the Hermitage Country Club on Tuesday including Robert Karlsson. The sophomore managed to score a good 69, as he finished at the 17th place tied with a 3 under in hands. In his entire last round game,
Karlsson’s play entertained 4 bogeys and birdies. His total score at the end of the event was 218; 76, 73 and then finally 69.
Next weekend, the fire-breathing Liberty Flames would be returning at the golf links. Liberty will be visiting the Daufuskie Island for the Reese Jones Intercollegiate Event 2010. The 54 hole event will take place at Haig Point Course on Monday.
