Golf news: Jason Day surges to lead at Deutsche Bank Championship
Jason Day rose to the lead of one shot in the third round of the Deutsche Bank Championship, which is taking place at the course of TPC Boston.
The 22-year-old Australian walked off the 18th green with one-shot lead on Sunday evening followed by Brandt Snedeker with a score of 16 under. The day started slow for the player but when he reached the 15th green, he was already three shots ahead of his most deadly enemy Snedekar, which gave him a sigh of relief but after two holes this relief was gone. As he walked on the 18th tee, Day saw Brandt Snedeker falling for a bogey on what is called the easiest holes of the course. This bogey was in result of a miscalculated shot from the rough, when Snedekar took the second shot, it got stuck in a greenside bunker, and when he took the fourth shot it went straight into the gorge. As for Day, he was planning to eagle the last hole to give a dramatic ending to the third round but it did not go according to his plan; however Day got settled with a regular birdie and a lead of one shot.
According to the analyst, Day has finally started to play some good golf especially during the FedEx playoffs. Earlier, he had only one victory in the entire season and that was at the Byron Nelson Championship that took place in May. However, after posting a score of 17-under 196, Day has matched the 54-hole record set by Mike Weir at the same venue of TPC Boston in 2008. This signifies that chances are that Day’s name might be seen in the top-three of the leader-board by tomorrow.
Apart from Day there was another player who got the most applause even though he was not in the lead. It was Brandt Snedeker, who was only three shots behind the leader before heading towards the 16th tee, and had delivered three birdies in a row. However, he failed to deliver one more at the last hole, when his shot got stuck in a hazard but when he managed to take it out and finish the round with a par, the whole crowd clapped and cheered for the player. According to Snedekar, the last two days were very tough for him but as there are opportunities lying somewhere in the corner, he grabbed his share and got himself safe to the other side of the round.
Day and Snedekar were not standing alone in the zone of outstanding performance; they were joined by Vijay Singh who made a hole in one on the par 5 second hole. Vijay held on to his 5-iron from 229 yards and when he took a shot to search for the greens the ball went straight into the hole. This is the second time in two years when someone has made a hole in one on the same hole. Last year it was John Senden who holds this credit. As for Singh, he settled for a score of 69 and is ready for the next session of the playoffs, which is the BMW Championship that is due next week in Chicago.
The next player in lead is Luke Donald, a player who has not got any victory since four years of the PGA tour. However this season he is determined to get a victory and that can be seen from the score he posted in the third round of the Deutsche Bank Championship. He made a 66 with the help of a birdie at the last hole and is only three shots behind the leader of the group.
This is it for the third round that ended yesterday with Jason Day in a lead by one shot, followed by Brant Snedekar and Luke Donald at second and third positions respectively. One more day is left and eighteen more holes are still waiting to decide who the final winner will be.
