Golf news: Jose Manuel Lara wins Austrian Open 2010 after a tie with David Lynn
On 19th of September, the Austrian Open 2010 ended with a glorious victory in Jose Manuel Lara’s hands. On the previous day, Lara and David Lynn stood with a tie at minus 17 for first place. The event catered a total of 74 players but only 54
players made par and above. Spain’s Lara, who won the Hong Kong Open in 2006, had already played his lucky shot at the 18th and ended up tied with Lynn. While Lynn played the last hole with his golf pal Danny Willett, Lara practiced in his black
and pink attire for the tie-breaker, eating bananas.
Lynn played a careful game at the 18th with par 4, wearing his shining white T-shirt. His first shot was smooth but was unable to make the fairway and landed on the semi-rough. His golf pal Willett at 18th was standing with a minus
15.
The 36-year-old Lynn had to play his 2nd shot from the semi-rough and had to cross a huge tree, where the ball needed to angle leftward. Lynn played the shot hard but unfortunately the ball landed at the brink of green, the very long distance from the hole
disappointing many in the crowd. It seemed like a tough time for Lynn, since a birdie from such a dreary point seemed difficult.
Lynn’s 3rd shot, however, couldn’t turn towards its destination and stopped short of the hole. Willett, on the other hand, played a smooth shot but his ball ran in the field like a hurried horse and headed towards the sand. He chose the sand to
play, as obvious for the 3rd shot, and glided the ball near the hole. The impressive shot stopped short of 4 feet from the hole. In the previous hole however, Willett faced a disappointed bogey that had placed him on minus 15.
At the 18th 3rd shot, Willet in his ‘ping’ golf cap sent the ball in Lynn’s lead and failed to make the fairway as well. At his par putt, the crowd ‘ooed’ disappointingly when Willett missed the short and ended on -14.
Coming back to Lynn, his short putt was earned well. Everyone hated the idea of him missing the putt, and they weren’t disappointed at all.
After the tie, both Lynn and Lara travelled in their golf carts towards the tie-breaker hole, which is known to be highly sneaky with its contouring and bunkers.
With Lynn carding a minus 4 with 68 and Lara carding a minus 8 with 64, they both stood with a minus 17 overall.
Honours was to Lynn, he practiced his shot and teed off the 409 meter long hole landing his ball in an awkward rough.
Lara played his shot brilliantly and confidently directing his ball in the fairway. His game had been way better than Lynn who had a gleaming birdie in the last 17th. Lynn saved the par with claps thundering the greens.
At the ultimate deciding tie-breaker, Lynn at his 2nd shot par 4 managed to play a slightly wobbled game but entered the fairway anyway. In his 3rd all he needed was to land near the pin. The line looked good, and he achieved a chance to par.
Lara in his white WS cap sent his ball on the green by playing his second shot and just like Lynn played a great putt, achieving a chance to par.
The final fourth shot was the most crucial; it decided the Austrian Open Champion. Both players had a chance to par and after Lynn played his shot, he missed the putt with inches. Lara however, didn’t falter at all and won the championship with a par at
hand.
“I was expecting something good,” Lara said laughingly after playing a game this big.
Pelle Edberg in his purple attire finished his game with a minus 10. Graeme McDowell in his Callaway cap stood at minus 14 at the last hole with a 69. He played the last round of the Austrian Open with a minus 3 and ended the event with a 69, 68, 68, and
69. Alexander Noren ended his game with a total of 69, 70, 67and 68.
