Golf news: Tiger Woods eyeing for the last hope
Tiger Woods has not given up hope and is eyeing his lost spot by claiming a victory at WGC-HSBC Championship, which is taking place at the Sheshan International Golf Club on Thursday.
The former world number one had to resign from his position after Lee Westwood surged to the top on 30th October, 2010. The 34-year-old had kept a hold on the claim for 281 consecutive weeks since July 1997, but owing to
a winless season, he had to surrender to the new champion, Lee Westwood.
However, Tiger Woods has a strong belief that he will accomplish his goal if he commits to a strong form. Despite this positivity, a strong threat that lingers on the head of Woods is that he will be facing a powerful field of
77 players.
Apart from the Ryder Cup squad, the nationwide champions, Noh Seung-yul, Yang Yong-eun, Ryo Ishikawa and K.J. Choi will also tee off today on the par 71 course. These young players will pose a great repulsion for the former world
number one and Tiger knows that.
Speaking on the issue Woods said, “It’s a h**l of a field out there this week and it's going to be a lot of fun to go out there and win the event. This is the biggest event in Asia and has a World Golf Championship title to it
so it is going to be exciting. I come to every event with the same intention and that is to win golf tournaments. Whether I'm ranked number one or not, that has not changed and it'll never will. That's why I come to golf events and get the W (win).”
This is the fourth time Tiger Woods has had to surrender his title in five years. In April 1999, he gave his crown to David Duval; in 2004, he relinquished it to Vijay Singh and the next year, the current PGA Grand slam winner
Ernie Els acquired the title. Singh and Duval are not a part of the current field, but Els is, and with him are world number three and four, Martin Kaymer and Phil Mickelson respectively. For the first time in 13 years, these four players have come face to
face in the epic battle. More the less, all four are eyeing the top rank of the Official World Golf Ranking.
The current world number one is all set to defend his title, but with a leg injury, chances of his success are vague. According to experts, Westwood’s chances of losing the title are high, as he is not physically fit to cope with
the demands of the course. Moreover, the defending champion of the event, Phil Mickelson is also ready to defend his title and with a victory at the same venue a year back, no one knows Sheshan International Golf Club better than him.
Apart from the battle for world number one domination, Woods is also cautious of the Asian players. Commenting on this topic Woods told the press, “There are more Asian players here than we have in other WGC events as they are
more American and European biased. It's exciting as you see a lot of players who have been playing well on the Asian Tour and Japanese Tour here and that's something which we don't usually see of this quantity.”
This is it for what Tiger Woods has to say about his hopes at the last event of the season, which is taking place near Moon Lake Park in Shanghai.
