Golf-obsessed father sent to prison after beating and torturing his kids for poor performance
A golf-obsessed father has reportedly been subjecting his two younger sons with severe beating and thrashing for not playing up to his “expectations”.
The incident that happened in the Lancashire County, in England, was brought to the light of the day when one of the boys appeared at the school with severe wounds that required immediate medical help.
The young boys, aged six and eight, have been receiving golf lessons from their fanatical father before going to school and were subjected to lengthy sessions of the sport even after school.
The elder one, although having won a junior tournament, also received painful torture, if in case he missed out a shot or played poorly.
The younger boy when questioned by the police about marks on his face and all over, revealed that his 33-year-old father has been pressurizing them to play good golf and beats them regularly for not paying attention.
The elder one, scared of his father’s backfire, refrained from sharing much information and said that it was “their job”.
"We are going to be championship golfers when we get older," said the elder one.
The obsessed father would beat the boys with the clubs if in case they played poorly or missed the green or dropped a shot during their practice sessions.
The elder one later revealed that he was struck with a club on his leg when he missed a shot and on one occasion, was hit by a golf ball from four feet, severely bruising his ear.
Judge Bevereley Lunt lamented the boy’s ordeal and termed it as “beyond belief”.
The guilty father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, accepted two counts of assault on his children and will now serve 12 months of sentence, extendable to further two years.
Prosecutor Sarah Statham said, "This is child cruelty. It's inexcusable and I do not believe any right thinking person could make any sense of it whatsoever. If you permit your obsession with golf to overcome you again and lay a finger on either of them you will immediately come back before me and I will send you to prison”.
The father is now separated from the family as the child protection agencies swung into action.
Defendant Carolyn Smith criticised the separation, citing that the accused has now agreed of his condemnable behaviour and to separate him from his loved ones will severely affect his mental state.
The recent upsurge in the popularity of the sport and the swelled up purses have had a serious impact on the ethics and moral values of the sport.
Often young kids are coerced to play and perform well during their school and college careers, in an attempt to switch over to professional circuits and possibly attempt to get into the lucrative tours around the world.
This recent incident in England sheds light into some of the brutalities which often follow the relentless pursuit of glory and star doom.
