Question:

Golf putting rules question?

When facing a short putt of say 3' or so. My playing partner does not make a backswing on the putt. Rather he simply grounds the putter behind the ball and pushes the ball into the cup with one forward motion. No take away then foreward stroke at all. He just pushes the putter and ball forward simultaneously. Is that legal?

  1. He can't scrape or push the ball - that's a penalty.  I would have my rule book handy and tell him on the 6 hole skin game.  On the other hand if two players agree to waive a rule they are both disqualified so technically if you know it's wrong and allow him to do it your are breaking the rules as well.

  2. The above answers are correct, however one thing I'd like to point out is that you can make a swing without a backswing. The club head cannot stay in contact with the ball for any longer than a standard swing.  Many people do not take a back swing when inside 6", so maybe he's doing the same for a 3' putt (Although I think it is more likely that he is actually pushing it, and therefore it is illegal like the above answers state.)

  3. 14-1. Ball to Be Fairly Struck At

The ball must be fairly struck at with the head of the club and

must not be pushed, scraped or spooned.

    Also...

Penalty for Breach of Rule 14-1 or 14-2:

Match play — Loss of hole; Stroke play — Two strokes.

  4. Both answers are correct.  But I assume you are just playing a friendly game.  Unless I'm playing a tournament or for a large amount of money little things like this don't bother me.  I just pay attention to my own game.

  5. Not legal at all.  You have to strike the ball.  No pushing, scooping, or anything like that is allowed.
