Hey im trying out for the highschool golf team and im going to b a sophmore. Do u think it is ok that when i tee off on par 4's or 5's i use a 3 wood becuz i tend to hit my 3 wood farther and straighter then i wud with a driver. With the driver i just dont feel comfortable, i tend to slice it ALOT and not go very far.

So the ? is do u think the coach wud care if i only use a 3 wood on the tee or wud he want me to use the driver?

  1. When playing in competition, go with your best...that's what the coach will demand.   In practice, however, you might want to focus more on the weaknesses in your game.

  2. Most schools will look at score more than anything for tryouts.  Who has the ability to shoot respectable #'s.

I know most golf programs happen in the Spring, so you still have a lot of time to practice.

I highly recommend taking a lesson from a golf pro usually around $50 for a 30 minute lesson.  But in one lesson you can cure that slice.  It's not that difficult to solve the slice with the driver.

But really the coach won't care if you tee off with a 7 iron on par 4's and 5's if you are still able to score around a par / bogey or better.

  3. I would think the coach would be looking for the best players available regardless of what methods they use to make their score. Golf is a game of strategy as much as anything else and he should be looking at how you manage the course and your decision making process in how you approach the game. A 260 yd drive is useless if you don't leave yourself with a high percentage second shot. He should be looking looking to see if you play to your strengths and avoid your weaknesses as much as possible. That you only take chances when reasonable and appropriate. In other words he should be looking for guys who play smart and get results. You using your 3 wood off the tee instead of your driver demonstrates that.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't work on your driver but when it counts, use what works.

  4. Hit your 3-wood.  The coach certainly won't have problem with it, especially if you can put it in the fairway better than your driver.  But, you should be prepared to put up with some c**p from your "teammates" (keep in mind you will be competing to play each week), as well as your opponents for not hitting your driver whenever possible.  You have to keep in mind that the only thing that really counts is your score, not your ego.

So if that matters to you, you need to be able to hit your driver more consistently.  Practice it , but don't use it until you feel confident that it is a better play than your 3-wood.

  5. honestly he shouldn't have a problem with it. If you watch the pros almost all of them use a wood or even a 1 or 2 iron rather than a driver on alot of their t shots on par 4's and 5's. I would say go with what works and makes you feel confortable.

  6. buddy if your hitting fairways at a good distance and your coach has a problem with it he is a tool. i actually do this i have the same problem with the driver. i sold mine and bought a callaway 3 wood i hit fairways at about 280 so i am competley fine with this because i am not in the trees and posting bad scores. so if your scoring good then you would be crazy to do any thing else.

  7. Your coach will really admire the fact that you realize you hit it straighter and longer with the 3 wood.  The last thing you want to do is pull out the driver just because you think you're supposed to.  At tryouts they will be looking for who can shoot the best score under the pressure of the tryout, so just hit the best shot you can each time and good luck.  Always remember - Golf is not about how far you can hit the ball, it is about how many times you hit it.
