Golf roundup- Hanson all set to take home the Ryder Cup
With a 20 under in the final round Peter Hanson has won the Czech Open and his entry into the Ryder Cup team.
Leaping from the 15th spot into the 8th on the European table points and finally in the Ryder cup team, Peter Hanson has finally blown the last chance of Paul Casey, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Justin Rose of making a cut in the team. Peter Hanson won the title after a sweating three-way playoff with Gary Boyd and Peter Lawrie, after delivering an enormous 18-foot birdie at the 18th hole of par 4.
The Swede was given the invitation of the event at the last moment on Monday, after his confirmation of 8th spot finish at the WGC-Bridgestone invitational that took place at the Firestone country club. After a tiring journey all the way to Celadna, Hanson gave a four-stroke lead in the final round of the event that was taking place at the Prosper Resort.
The final round of the Czech open 2010 was full of tension for the 32-year-old Hanson who had a four strokes lead from the previous night but on his way to the front nine he delivered three straight bogeys but to counter that off he birdied the 5th, 10th and 16th hole. To keep himself in a state of contention he scored a 2-over 74 and finished at 10-under 278 in the final moments. The result of 3 earlier bogeys got him stuck in the playoff with two other players, Peter Lawrie from Ireland and Gary Boyd from England. Both the players were 10 under par but their scores of 66 and 68 were better than Hanson’s 74.
However, Hanson took his chance after the first hole of the playoff went with a par for all three; he birdied the next hole and the hole after that to make a difference of £142,000 in the prize money and 160,000 in Ryder Cup points.
According to the media reports, the last putt delivered by Peter Hanson created the impact and this playoff victory is the third one in a record of 3 playoffs at the European tour. This means Hanson has consecutive 3 out of 3 wins at the playoffs, which is yet another record in itself.
Moving forward Paul Casey, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Justin Rose have finally decided to stay back at home and wait for the wild card pick by the captain Colin Montgomerie rather than playing at the Gleneagles for the Johnnie Walker Championship. As fate will decide who pays the price, as one of the three will be expelled from the tournament. Other than these golfers, Edoardo Molinari and Miguel Angel Jimenez need a wild card too. They wouldn’t have required it if Jimenez won’t have closed the final round with 73 as this gave Hanson a lift of 1 spot from the 9th place to the 8th on the Ryder Cup team. The ironic part of the story is that Miguel Angel Jimenez is the designer of the course on which he lost yesterday. Before the final round Jimenez was in a tied 2nd spot and after the final minutes he was left in the 7th place with a tie.
Moreover, Simon Dyson was also one of the players who was struck by bad luck as he too came all the way from the 2nd spot leader to the 5th. He scored a 72 in the final round but he has not given up like his fellows Paul Casey, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Justin Rose as he is going to take part in the Johnnie Walker Championship which is taking place next Sunday.
Summing it up, the final round of the Czech Open has ended on Sunday and Peter Hanson has been declared the winner of the penultimate event of the season .He won by a score of 20 under followed by Peter Lawrie and Gary Boyd in the second spot.
