Golf rules question.?

I seen a golf commercial on TV where Gary McCord was 2 inches away from the hole on a putt. He then purposely putted the ball about 100 feet past the pin. He dropped another ball from the previous spot of 2 inches from the pin and knocked it in. He said it was legal with a 1 storke penalty. Does anybody know what rule this is?

  1. The rule that can be implied is that you can call an unplayable wich gives you the right to play from the previous spot with a 1 stroke penalty, so if he was putting for a birdie, after the placement he is now putting for a bogey....

  2. do you still need an answer. I will say the ball can't be deemed unplayable after it is played. Only before the ball is addressed

  3. You are absolutely correct.  You can always take an unplayable lie and go back to where the last shot was played from, under penalty of one stroke.  Most people are unaware of this (in fact, they are unaware of most of the rules of golf), that's why they are telling you not to do it.  But this is a case where knowing the rules works to your advantage.

  4. Wow, people need to get a clue when it comes to rules. The ignorance is absolutely overwhelming. It's up the player to determine what is "unplayable"  The rules can help as well as hurt.

  5. I've never heard of that being the case. In fact someone tried to pull that during a tournament this past summer and the official overruled him and actually slapped him with a penalty for undue delay of the match because there was nothing around to deem the ball "unplayable"

Why in gods name you'd want to declare a ball unplayable when it's not is beyond me. That's just plain stupid... oh wait, it's McCord.

  6. You can declare your ball unplayable anwhere, anytime you want.  After you declare the unplayable one of your options is to take the one stroke penalty and hit from the previous spot so I guess in the McCord example that would be what going on.

  7. i dont know what rule it is, it is a normal shot and u have to play it u can not drop if u hit the ball of the green u have to go for the green again there is no way that u can drop the ball very good q

  8. I don't think that's right because if you u hit the ball 100 feet past the hole, u have 2 keep playing that ball unless it goes out of bounds. Then u would have 2 play it from the previous spot. I have never heard of a rule like that

  9. There is no such rule. The only way you get a drop is if you hit the ball out of bounds and its not going to be 2 inches from the hole, lol. At least thats what i think,i could be wrong though.

  10. You're right about Rule 28. That's exactly what you can do. I've implemented the rule after skulling a ball out of a green-side bunker, blasting the ball 40 yards back down the fairway.
