Golf season 2013-14 will be led by Frys.com Open
Good news for the Bay Area Golf fans! Frys.com Open will now be a part of the PGA Tour and will also be carrying FedEx points.
For the last two years, the Tournament Directors have been lobbying with the Commissioner to make this event a season opener.
However, being the season opener might mean that some big names, including the likes of Tiger Woods, may miss the event.
This is because the tournament starts just two weeks after the season has ended. Many players like to take some time off before heading into the next season.
On the other hand, awarding full FedEx points means that many players will participate in it. The tournament is scheduled to take place from October 10-13, 2013.
Butler was also hopeful that the tournament will be able to attract big name players like Tiger Woods.
"I expect we will get some of the top players," Butler said. "I think we have a growing reputation among players for staging a nice tournament".
Frys.com Open takes place after the Presidents Cup. The tournament is played at CordeValle for the past two years and this year is no different.
However, it is still unclear whether the Institute will be ready in time before next year to host the event.
The clubhouse is still under construction and considerable work is still needed to be done before it is ready to host the 2013 PGA Tour opening tournament.
Two upcoming talents Patrick Cantlay and John Peterson have been granted sponsor’s exemption and they will be featuring in this year’s event.
The last time around, Tiger Woods was tied at 30 at the end of the tournament. However, it seems very unlikely that he will play this year at Frys.com Open. Fry’s is basically an electronics company which sponsors this event.
Tournament Chairperson Kathy Kolder, an Executive Vice President and Co-Founder of Fry's said, "Duke Butler, Tournament President, and I have been striving for this change of schedule for two years, so this is great news. It should help grow our event in
stature, player field, Golf Channel audience, and attendance, therefore increasing net contributions to charity".
