Golf special - Who is the BBC Sports Personality of the Year?
Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer, and Lee Westwood are ready to fight for one more title and that is the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
According to a press release, McDowell and Westwood have been nominated in England, whereas, Kaymer has qualified for a similar title back at home. One thing is evident - Graeme would not have to fight Martin for this title. However, he is still in contention
against Mark Cavendish, Tom Daley, Jessica Ennis, David Haye, Tony McCoy, Phil Taylor, Graeme Swann, and Amy Williams.
The ceremony will take place in Birmingham on December 19th and the event will be broadcasted live. According to a press release, live public voting will take place during the show.
The runner-up of Race to Dubai, McDowell has the highest possibility of winning the title. The Irish was extremely excited with his nomination and acclaimed that the hard work paid off with the good news. He wrote this on his Twitter account on Tuesday morning,
after reaching Los Angeles.
McDowell tweeted, “After a 16 hour Dubai – LA flight I’ve just found out that I have been officially nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. Amazing to even be nominated for such a prestigious award alongside some legends of their sport.”
The Irish is eleventh according to the official world rankings and winner of three titles in 2010. The 31-year-old earned Europe a point, which ultimately led to their victory in Ryder Cup against United States. Moreover, he was second in Race to Dubai ranking,
which pushed him very close to Martin Kaymer, who won the rankings.
On the other end, Kaymer reached home to receive similar news. However, the 25-year-old was not equally delighted as he had certain reservations that he would lose to Formula One racing sensation, Sebastian Vettel. He quoted, “I heard that I was nominated
for it, and I think I had a fairly good chance, but now he has won the World Championship. It is fair enough. The best should win. Formula One is bigger than golf in Germany. His performance this year was great. Maybe I can still battle him a little bit.”
Kaymer does not seem confident, quite the opposite of his morale throughout the season. The German recently won the title of Europe’s number one golfer. Moreover, he won four times on both the US PGA and the European tour and earned a massive amount of €5million.
Another nominee for the award is another golfer Lee Westwood. The Englishman took the throne as world’s number one golfer in October and now he is waiting for the polls to crown him as the “BBC Sports Personality of the Year.”
Apart from this award, another title of BBC Team of the Year will be awarded in the same ceremony. According to the press releases, European Ryder Cup Team, which was led by Colin Montgomerie, is one of the three candidates for the category.
After yet another superb season in golf, BBC, a news channel has decided to hold an award ceremony in Birmingham on December 19th
to honour the golfers who performed brilliantly throughout the season. Graeme McDowell and Lee Westwood have been nominated for the category of BBC Sports Personality of the Year, meanwhile, Martin Kaymer is being considered for a similar award in Germany.
The legendary golfer, Sir Nick Faldo was the first golfer ever to embrace the award BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1989.
Appreciation is one way of saluting the champions who work hard throughout the season to provide entertainment to people around them. It is yet to be seen what change this award brings in the world leaders.
