Golf swing for Driver-found it!/Golf swing for short irons-lost it!?

If the pro's are correct, they say all clubs have the same swing.

I still cant figure this out. Even when I have swung with the correct adress and grip for shorter irons, it does not feel similar to my driver swing.

Currently Iam hitting driver very well, but all the sudden i lost the feel in my SW, and PW. The shots that once were 90-110 yds and high, are now 90-110 yard low line drives or worm burners. This seems to happen. When irons work-Driver slices, or when Driver works-irons are hit thin.

  1. The swing is basically the same for the driver and short irons.  The adjustments are made preswing.  Even though the swings are the same, the setup positions are completely different.  We want to strike down on a short iron, yet catch the driver on the upswing. So setup changes are needed to accomadate this.  For a driver, the ball will be more forward, the stance wider, the spine tilted slightly more to your right, etc.  And just the opposite for your short irons.

  2. When pros talk about one swing for all clubs they are talking about swing tempo and rhythm. Ball position, address position, how hard you swing, are all going to be very different from SW to driver.

I would get the idea of “same swing” out of your head. Drivers are more of a sweeping swing. Irons need to be hit down on.

Get to the range, hit iron then driver then iron, driver, iron… Remember to start over after every shot, pre-shot routine, line up, practice swing, then go. Hit targets with irons, and full, hard drivers. Issues like this usually just need to be worked out, if the issue becomes unbearable see a pro, get some video taped lessons.

  3. bend over a little more with your irons then with the driver.

  4. One thing that I do with my short irons, is that I hit them with more of a 3/4 swing. The driver sets up with your hands closer to the middle of your stance while the irons set up with your hands inside your front/left thigh (assuming that you are right handed).

I use a slightly slower swing with my wedges than I do with the driver.

  5. thats golf, sound like your just hitting your wedges thin, try putting the ball back in your stance a little bit with the wedges

  6. Hmmm, I have that issue sometimes and my deal is that I am coming out of my stance at impact.  You have to maintain the stance through impact to hit a full shot.  I'm working on pressing my right foot down so I can feel that I am maintaining my stance.  The first time I played this year, I hit 2 shots within 5 feet of the pin.

  7. I see that some of the other answers have some great ideas. Especially, moving the ball back in your stance. Remember the driver is hit pretty much with the ball positioned close to your front foot, while a sand wedge should maybe be 2/3 of the way back, much closer to your back foot. You also may be raising up to hit the middle of the ball. MAINLY MANY OF THESE THINGS ARE BETWEEN YOUR EARS. JUST CONCENTRATE ON WATCHING THE BALL, RELAX AND DON'T TRY TO MAKE IT A CLUB THING. Almost all golfers go through times when one club just seems to work better than the others. Hang on, it will change again.
