  1. The position of the ball is relatively the same whether you use a 3 or 9 iron. There is only so much distance between your lead leg and back leg where one can place the ball. The longer irons are played closer to the inside of the leading heel while the others irons are played at the center of the stance or just slightly back of center. The length of the club will help determine whether you stand closer to the ball or whether you reach for it. One does not vary the golf swing.

  2. The 3 iron head travels a lot farther than the 9 iron head, so it takes a little longer to get to the ball - wait for it :):)

The timing of when the clubhead gets back to square is the issue for most people who can't hit long irons.  I take 3-4 practice swings before the shot to get the feel of the clubhead releasing.  Don't forget to hit down and don't play the ball to far forward in your stance.  Works for me - hope it helps you.

  3. If you continually blade the 3 and 9 irons, it sounds like you are lifting your head too early. Keep looking at the ball until the ball has been struck and you are in your follow through. Don't worry about where the ball is going, when you have hit it right it will be in the air, right where you expect it to be.

    Keep your head down.
