Golf update, Parry wins the Vivendi Cup, Harrington regains his form
The English boy, John Parry became the third rookie in the season to claim a victory on the European Tour. He won the Vivendi Cup by a two stroke lead over the first day leader, Johan Edfors.
Parry is a 23-year-old rookie, who happens to be a former Walker Cup player as well. He turned professional in 2007 and he is 116th on the money list.
Parry entered the tournament with no clear plans of winning but down the lane, he fired a closing round of 70 at the Retz and Marley course, to seize the top prize of £169,638. He posted a score of 17-under-par with the help of 271 strokes. This victory
has earned the player next year’s tour card, which he was longing for, as he is 116th on the money list.
John Parry started the final round in his usual slow fashion and pared most of the holes. However, he faltered only once and that was at the 17th hole, where his second shot got stuck in a bunker. The 23-year-old was about to lose his two shot
lead over Johan Edfors, just then Edfors found the same sand and carded a bogey.
Looking at this close combat the spectators were stuck in a dilemma of who the winner will be? Owing to four birdies in 18 holes, John Parry took the lead and claimed his ticket that would stop him from going to the Qualifying school.
Earlier, John Parry was inches away from victory at the Austrian Open which took place last week. There, he held the half way lead but down the lane he stumbled to a 20th place finish. According to the player, he got really disappointed at his
loss in Austria therefore, after reaching the Retz and Marley course, he practiced hard to make the victory happen.
As said by the experts, Parry has shown quite an improvement in his game ever since the Austrian Open. Initially, he lacked refinement in putting but, here at the Retz and Marley course he showed a tremendous amount of improvement. His swings showed versatility
and he handled the long pars with ease.
Moving forward, the Swede, Johan Edfors lost the tournament title by one stroke. He shot 2-under 70. Although, he started the four day session with a lead, but gradually he lost his pace. There were fluctuations in his scores which demonstrated lack of consistency.
It was obvious that he was trying hard to stay in lead but the final verdict went against his. His final stats were 61-74-67-71.
The runner-up was followed by a group of five players, Francois Delamontagne, Robert-Jan, Jarmo Sandelin, Soren Kjeldsen and Mark Haastrup. They settled with a score of 14-under with the help of 274 strokes to win the prize money of $70,070.
At the eighth place was Padraig Harrington with James Morrion, Richard Green and Pablo Larrazabal. Monty’s wild card pick showed signs of rounding into form ahead of the Ryder Cup. He shot a 64 and settled at 13-under with the help of 13 birdies and one
eagle. Though, once again he failed to win a tournament this season, he certainly has proved to his captain that he is ready for the challenge at Celtic Manor. The said location is the venue for the Ryder Cup which is due in five days.
According to Harrington, he is very enthusiastic about the Ryder Cup and he will be taking an early flight to Wales to visit the Twenty- ten course. He further added, that he realized he missed a couple of shots but at the same time, he was glad for
regaining his lost form.
This is it for the last round of the Vivendi Cup in which John Parry roared to victory and Padraig Harrington found his game. Harrington will be catching a flight on Tuesday night for Wales where he will meet his captain along with the rest of the team.
