Golf update: Colin Montgomerie and team gearing up for the Ryder cup
Flip the coin and you will see the positive aspect of missing the cut to the tour championship. Monty can see that side that is why he is pleased for Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter not making it to the final leg of the playoffs.
After consecutive matches and constant air trips, two team members of the European side can finally relax. This relaxation apparently gives a bad sign to the overall team’s morale but the captain of the clan, Colin Montgomerie believes that this break will
be a great help in the end. The reasoning which the captain presents is that both the players will finally get some time to cool down, relax their minds and body, and in result their performance will be better than the American side.
Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter have failed to make a cut in the top 30 players after a terrible performance at the Cogs Hill, where the BMW championship was taking place. They have joined the league of Padraig Harrington, who got an early exit for the series.
This means, the European team is not only practicing at home but they are also shedding off the exhaustion, which they got by the busy schedule of the PGA tour. The only European team member who qualified the next match is Luke Donald, who is currently ranked
as the world number eight. He will be playing next to nine American Ryder cup team members.
Moreover, nine of Corey Pavin’s American team members will be flying to Wales after contesting in the Tour championship, which is taking place in Atlanta. It takes ten hours for a flight to reach Wales from Atlanta. Imagine the amount of tiredness and fatigue
of playing and then flying? Tour championship will end on 26th September which means there is hardly a gap of five days. On the night of 31st September, Celebration ceremony will start in the Millennium stadium and right after that the
four balls and foursomes will be executed.
If this is the stance of the captain and three of his players, then another assertion is taking place in rest. Graeme McDowell is ready to make an appearance at the Austrian Open. This appearance is not for the urge of money, as the tournament holds the
lowest amount of winner prize. According to Graeme, he wants to practice before the Ryder cup; therefore, he finds this tournament quite beneficial and necessary. Quite similar is the stance of another European player as well. Miguel Angel Jimenez, who won
the European Maters two weeks back, will be flying to Atzenbrugg, Paris where the Vivendi Cup is taking place. He will be joined by Peter Hanson, Edoardo Molinari, Padraig Harrington and Graeme Mc Dowell.
However, these players don’t need a rehearsal session, although there is a guy who needs it. Lee Westwood needs to pull himself back in the form, as he has been absent from the competitive golf since a long time. Westy has been recovering from a calf injury,
owing to which he could not attend most of the events this year but this is the time when he should pack his bags and fly to Atlanta to see where he stands. World No 3 wants to give the injury the maximum amount of recovery time which is fair enough. However,
his healing time may not prove to be healthy for his game.
Bernhard Langer was also going through the same dilemma, as he too was suffering from a neck injury but after a gap of six weeks he won the foursomes matches, dragging his team into a lead.
Summing it up, Monty and his team are getting equipped for the humongous event of the season. Rory and Ian are taking time off; Jimenez, Harrington, Hanson and Donald are warming up. It seems Monty is putting stress aside, as he has realized that his team
is in a relatively good form.
