Golf update: Lee Westwood eyeing number one title

Tiger Woods' number one title is once again under threat; first it was Phil Mickelson and now it is Lee Westwood. The new world number 2 is staying back in Europe to attend the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship
which is starting on Thursday, 7th October, 2010. He bids that the world number one title will be his!
After returning from a fast recovery, Lee Westwood stole the show in the Celtic Manor where he won two of the three matches. The man was undeniable and unbeatable from the start: in fact it was him who started
the session of winning for the Europeans.  This time, he has bid that he will end the era of Tiger Woods’ at the tournament which is carrying a purse of $5 million.
The question will remain unanswered till the weekend but one thing has been clarified with this event is that the player puts his family first and riches second. US tour has offered   fortunes to the player but he has refused them
as it would hamper his kids' vacations and nothing is worthwhile than his family time.
He said, "The FedEx Cup sits right in the middle of the kids' summer holidays and I like going on holiday with them. I don't want to be dictated to by having to go to America to play FedEx Cup when it doesn't really mean that much
to me......It doesn't mean enough to me anyway.”
Moreover, Lee Westwood believes that the Ryder Cup has ended; therefore, it’s time to think about personal interests rather than what PGA Tour wants. Like Jim Furyk, it’s not, money that he wants right now as it does not interests
him. Westy might have a different plan but after the conversation with his manager he opted for something else.
Westwood had a conversation with his manager Andrew Chandler who helped him change his mind.  Westy told the press, “Chubby said why take up membership in the States when you've been the most successful player in the world this
year and (despite a seven-week injury lay-off) still have a great chance to go to world number one? You've come second in two major championships, you must be doing something right, why not stick to the same schedule?”
Lee Westwood is very close to replace Tiger Woods’ number one title and if he finishes in the top two positions then Tiger will have to wipe his hands off the five year era.  This achievement was skeptical for the player as down
the career path there were couple of ups and downs. Nine years back Lee Westwood, reached the number 4 spot of the OWGR, and then he slipped out of top 250. There was a time when he posted rounds of 81 and 79 in the 2003, Portuguese Open.
If Westy accomplishes this goal then he will become   the fourth player to do it without winning a major. Earlier Ian Woosnam, Fred Couples and David Duval have held the same privilege.
The Ryder Cup winner got ready for the tournament by skipping the practice round on Wednesday. He did this in order to get rest before the tournament and after the nail biting battle at Celtic Manor.
Lee Westwood can reach the number one spot by skipping this tournament but he won’t do it as he wants to prove the world that he deserves the title. The all determined player will  be defending his title in the Portugal Masters
which is taking place next week and by then  Tiger Woods will have been de–throned.
