Golf update - Monty manages to break par after two years
Colin Montgomerie rocked the course of Kingsbarns by completing the first three holes of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with one–under-par.
He started by putting in more effort yesterday than he normally does. The 47-year-old Scot was only three shots behind the early leader, Pablo Larrazabal. The victorious Ryder Cup team captain is not alone in the field; along with
him are nine of his devotees. Francesco Molinari, who lost to Tiger Woods in the singles, is one-under-par along with Martin Kaymer. As for Rory McIlroy, so far the young lad is going well and he had a fine opening with four-under-par.
Like Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, too posted a four-under in the opening round. He needs a finish of top two to snatch Tiger Woods title of world number one. Lee Westwood is currently eyeing a new accomplishment after winning the
Ryder Cup. Ironically, he was absent from the competitive golf scenario for a month after a calf injury and had no practice for the Ryder Cup but the way he came, actually saw the course and conquered it. Once again he is in the mood to set some more drama
and steal Tiger Woods’ throne.
As for the European striker, he has been giving the worst performance of the year and his ranking proves it. He has dropped from 135th to 425th spot in the official world golf ranking and has no top-10 finishes
in 28 months. However, this time he is in the mood to set the slump aside and focus solely on the game. Moreover, he is accompanied by his brother Douglas; therefore, the confidence and the excitement is twice for him.
Apart from him the South African Trevor Fisher and Swede Mikael Lundberg were also in the chase for the early lead. They are one shot behind the leader.
Nine of Montgomerie team members are playing in the event to seek the purse of $5million. Chances are that, few of them will reach the top of the leaderboard but if they do not then no worries, as they are just back from one tough
battle.
