Golf update: Samundra Giri rules The Western Union-NGA National Amateur Championship 2010
The Western Union-NGA National Amateur Championship initiated yesterday at Kathmandu and witnessed Samundra Giri topping the individual standings with a 73.
The first phase of the three-day extravaganza was mostly dominated by Giri as he carded a one-over at the Gokarna Golf Club.
The leader managed to card a brilliant even-par-score of 36 from the front nine while the back nine ended with a 1-over from the par. With the home club amateur collecting a 37 from the back nine play, his overall position materialized into a three shot
lead over his opponent golfer Bhuwan Gurung.
Gurung is a golfer from the Himalayan Golf Club of Pokhara and threatened Giri continuously with his solid drives.
However, the second place golfer ended at the runner up place with a 76 in hands and defended the overwhelming Tashi Tsering with a 4 up. The golfer from Gokarna carded a 77 in total and contended to land on the third place of the leader board.
The fourth spot was handed out to Bikash Bogati after he played a 79 in round one.
To round up the top five, Sanjay Lama and Puskar Rajbahak finished their play over a tie. The golfers represented the Royal Nepal Golf Club and Tribhuvan Army Officers Golf Club and completed the top-five cult with a score of 80.
Other than topping the leader board for day 1, Samundra was also honoured with two awards after the first day of the tournament. The golfer claimed the 'Nett Winner' and the 'most birdies' award from his controlled play and managed to card a 68 with a four
under.
One place behind Samundra, Laxman Pun came second with a score 70 while the leader carded a total of 3 birdies, 1 eagle and 6 bogeys.
With Giri dominating the greens individually, team Gokarna Forest Golf Resort ruled the boards in the team category.
The team was led by a gleaming score of 77 by Tashi Tsering along with Wanchen Dhondup, Lobsang Tashi and RK Pradhan as a strong line-up whose score catapulted the team in a leading position. The three golfers carded an 81, an 85 and a 95 for a total of
241 and handed their team a lead of 10 shots over the rivals RNGC and Himalayan Club teams.
The RNGC team collected a total score of 251 after Sanjay Lama’s 80, Rabin Rana’s 88 and Lobsang Tsering Gurung’s 83 to stand behind Gokarna Forest Golf Resort in team ratings.
