  1. This falls under Equitable Stroke Control:

Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) is a procedure whereby abnormally high individual hole scores are adjusted downward prior to the score being posted. ESC sets a maximum number that a golfer can post on any hole, depending on the golfer’s Course Handicap (not his Handicap Index). Effective Feb. 1, 1998, individual hole scores will be adjusted for handicap purposes per the following table:

Course Handicap................Maximum number on any hole

    9 or less............................... Double bogey

    10 through 19 ......................7

    20 through 29...................... 8

    30 through 39....................... 9

    40 or more ............................10

BTW this is when you post your score, not on the score card. The 12 stills shows on the card, but when you post it, you can adjust that hole based on your COURSE HC.

  2. if you are a 17 handicap you take a double boggie max out and if you are over that then it is triple boggie.

  3. There is no such thing as maximum strokes allowed per hole. Even pros have registered 12 strokes for a PAR 3 hole. BUT, if if you are referring to Stableford play then there will be a limit to your no. of shots to gain the eligible Stableford point(s) based on your handicap and the respective hole's Stroke Index.

The other possible target for your question perhaps is the maximum score permitted (for any handicap) in order to play to your handicap. This simply means you just have to return a total gross score (over 18 holes) equal to your handicap plus the PAR value of the golf course. You may have double bogeys, or triples or even quadruples in your round but if they are compensated by eagles or birdies, then you are alright.

The bottomline in golf is either you play 'under' Or 'over' and by how much, that's all there is to it, between winning Or losing.
