Golfers eye upcoming tournament in Austria - UNIQA Ladies Golf Open 2012
The greatest Austrian title is on the way and the ladies are excited for the 2012 UNIQA Ladies Golf Open.
The event is scheduled for September 7 till 9 and will be presented by Raiffeisen. The venue is Fohrenwald-Wiener Neustadt Golf Club, the traditional home of the event. Many experts rate the tournament very high, given the number and calibre of the players
who participate in this event.
The event has a long history and has been held under various names. Usually the names reflect the main sponsor for the event. The current event will be held under the title, UNIQA Ladies Golf Open 2012 presented by Raiffeisen.
The tournament is considered an important stop on the Ladies European Tour and major players on the tour participate both for the prestige and a share in the prize fund.
The tournament is traditionally dominated by European players. Swedish and English players have dominated the tournament and equally share the title over the years. In its current form, the tournament can trace its origins to 2005.
Back then, it was known as Siemens Austrian Ladies Open. The venue was the same as today but the line-up of the players has changed. The tournament used to be a small European event with no international mix of the players we see today. Gradually, the trend
changed as more LET players decided to play in the event.
The first winner of the tournament was the Italian player Federica Piovano. That was way back in 2005, when the tournament received its new name. This was the only time, the title went to Italy. From then onwards, it was either the English or Swedes who
dominated the leaderboard.
What makes the event special?
For one, it is the only LET event that takes place in Austria. The small European country boasts of a great golf course located just outside Vienna.
According to players, the Fohrenwald-Wiener Neustadt Golf Club is a joy to play in. The next and more important reason is the increasing status of the tournament.
This year, the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open will be hotly contested and players on LET will offer great golf to their fans.
