Golfers improvise by using tennis balls to beat the cold
In a one of tournament held in Accrington, golfers came up with their very own way of fighting the bad weather. Teeing off with tennis balls, over fifty players used the big yellow balls in place of the small white ones.
The absurd, yet brilliant idea came about as club professional, 42-year-old Mark Harling challenged 51-year-old steward Trevor Foster at the clubhouse in Accrington and district golf club.
Trevor, of Newton Street, West End Oswaldtwistle, stated that Harling asked him if he reckoned hitting a tennis ball with a golf club. Intrigued by the idea, Foster said that he would want to find out.
In addition, the golfer said that the two went out, had a go at it and had a good time apart from having a good laugh. Having enjoyed themselves, Foster and Harling then decided to arrange a tournament. According to the pair, initially people thought they were mad but after having a go at it, everybody realized that they loved it.
"The course had been covered in four to five inches of snow over the last few weeks. The players were getting frustrated. You know what golfers are like - they just can't get wait to get out on the course, so this was a great chance to get out and have a game and a bit of fun," stated Mark of Chapel Street, Rishton.
The cups were furthermore, extended from three to six inches to allow the tennis balls to drop. A staggering fifty-six players participated in the tournament held on the back nine holes.

"It's certainly a challenge. It flies through the air okay but it only goes a maximum of about 80 yards and there's no bounce or anything when it pitches," said Mark.
Trevor went on to state that two women from England and three professionals took part in the tournament, which really caught the attention of the people. The club was also given over a hundred free tennis balls by a sports shop by the name of DW Sports after the owners were made aware of the event. Golfing pro Harling said that hitting the ball was an experience in itself.
