Golfers warned about conduct for US Open
Regardless of how talented or skilled a player is, lack of good conduct will always be counted against the player and could even land him/her in trouble.
Keeping this in mind, the chief executive of the Royal and Ancient Club, Peter Dawson has put down his foot. With the US Open approaching Royal St. George’s in July, 2011, Dawson wants these players to act as proper gentlemen.
“These guys are role models and we are looking for them to behave as well as possible on the course”, said Dawson. “There have obviously been some incidents we don’t like. I still think generally the behaviour in our sport is a model for other sports and it is why those incidents get so much publicity.
The boss of the Open specifically named Tiger Woods and warned him of improper behaviour. The former World No.1 was fined by the European Tour in February, 2011 after he spat on a green at the Dubai Desert Classic in Dubai.
Golf is a gentleman’s sport and misbehaviour is just not acceptable.
Not having learnt from his fine, Woods repeated the offence at the Masters tournament at Augusta National Club as well. Even though US TV did not show Tiger Woods spitting, other examples of misconduct were audible to the players.
Woods and 2010 Masters Champion Phil Mickelson were caught on camera swearing after bad shots. Woods has especially been known for not controlling his anger, as frustration and disappointment bring out the bad side of Woods.
Woods is not the only one, as many golfers are victims of frustration and are known to throw clubs, spit, or, swear while playing.
The most expensive golf circuit, PGA is very discreet about disciplinary actions taken against the players. However, they do regularly fine players for poor conduct on the course. The only time it was made public was when John Daly’s 456-page personnel file was revealed during a court case last year.
With the Masters already gone, golf fans and players are awaiting the next major championship. The US Open is scheduled to take place at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland from June 16th till June 19th.
