All the instruction I have read says that you need to get you hands in front of the clubhead at impact (especially with irons). However, when I try to do this, I can't figure out how to release the club properly. I generally hit the ball way right or snap hook it left. For some reason I can't keep my hands ahead of the ball at impact, release the club, and not break down my left writst. Anybody have any ideas???

  1. You are either swinging out-to-in or not turning your arms over...or both.  The way u describe your ball flight, I vote for out-to-in.  In either case, your club face is open at impact, resulting in  either a slice (way right) or snap hook it left.

Go to Jim McLeans website to see what I mean.

  2. You may get lots of advice on this subject, But no one will tell you."the swing starts under your feet,up through your legs, through the body,to the shoulders, down the arms and then to the hands ". Think about it. Most humans don't know this.

So, if the swing is controlled by the hands, you will never get to where you want to go.

  3. Its a matter of inches and takes a lot of practice.   Try making half swings, going back till the club shaft is straight up and down, and then swinging thru until the shaft is again straight up and down.  Its a David Ledbetter drill called 'Going from "L" to "L" and helps you get your wrists involved properly.

  4. All of the books in the world will not teach you a proper golf swing.......See your local teaching pro and get your swing fixed......the release is a natural reaction to a good golfswing.

  5. I used to have this problem years back.

What you need to do is get out into your back yard with your clubs and find a window you can stand in front of and see your reflection in. This way you can practice your swing while being able to occasionally look up and see if your are getting your hands in the correct position. (Just like a mirror)

Now practice that for 15 mins, take a break go watch some golf on the TV and come back and repeat it until you have it. It will start to feel natural very quickly.

Also if you practice the above exercise while holding two clubs at once. Swing slowly and try the same thing. The reason for the two clubs is that it will cause more weight and make your muscles remember the new swing easier. Do this a few times in between the above exercise and you will get it perfect.

Also before you start hitting balls, try putting a tee in the ground and put it right down with only the head showing. You will get it quicker practicing without the ball. Believe me ;)

Then you will be ready for the driving range and hitting balls.

Take care, have fun and good luck with the swing,

    Rick

  6. swing naturally and make YOUR swing work for yourself.  there are some very unconventional swings on the tour but if you can make yours work than go for it!

  8. The way I've been taught in the past is the 4 L's, Here's how it was broken down to me.

    1. As you take your irons back at setup pretend that you are  brushing the grass. at this point you should feel your weight move towards the outside of your right foot (left foot if your Phil) your club shaft should be paralell to the ground with the toe of the club head pointing 90 degrees to the sky, this is you first L.

    2. Mainting that position your shoulder should rotate until your create your second L, and your shaft paralell to the ground and club head pointing to the target, (ideally)

    3. Your release, you should rotate your shoulders leading with the hip as if its hitting into a wall, creating the third L and leading the club paralell with the ground. Remember you glutusmaximus, right butt cheek come into play here.

    4. This is where it sounds like you need to work on. (Steps 1, 2, and  3 forces your club to stay on the inside of your swing) Now just imagine that your are pushing your right thumb causing the club head to strike down towards the golf ball. this movement will help you line up your club head square as it was during your setup. At this point your hands are already ahead of the ball trapping the ball between your club head and hands. Allow your left hand to lead the club through the ball, almost like slapping the ball with the club face rather than hitting it. Once properly executed you should see your shaft parallel to the ground, pointing to the target and the club head point 90 degrees creating your 4th L. All of this happen in a matter of seconds. As some of the previous responders stated, using a mirror a and practicing this without the ball will help you immensely. Your gain accuracy and a lot more power off the tee and fairways.

What has Mike Weir been doing as part of his routine off the tee? The answer, step 2.

Oh! remember to keep your wrist limber and arms loose.

Good Luck and hope this helps

  9. I used to have the same problem... if you focus on opening the club face as you start your swing, then focus on turning your right wrist over as you hit the ball, it should help. just keep your weight on the insides of your feet and it should take care of keeping your hands in front of the ball. golf is great! i hope this helps!!
