Golf’s Top Tweeters – Part 2
5. Rickie Fowler
Country: USA
Account: @RickieFowlerPGA
Fans: 106K
Just 22 years old, it’s no surprise that Fowler is also in the list of Tweeting freaks as social networking is in vogue for his age group. His status reads “Go Time” before he goes offline to tee-off and is also quite brave to engage the fans in Q & A sessions.
6. Lee Westwood
Country: England
Account: @Westwoodlee
Fans: 165K
It seems Westy can’t really hold on to the number one spot for long anywhere let alone golf, but he is not far behind the most frequently Tweeting golfers. Westwood is often seen pitched in a fight with Rory Mcllroy and has the honour of giving Rory the
nickname “Afroboy”. Westwood still has to do a lot of work to catch up Poulter and Cink as he has just logged in to his account.
7. Rory Mcllroy
Country: Northern Ireland
Account: @Mcllroy Rory
Fans: 232K
McIlroy’s Tweeting frequency is also doing quite well. One of the photos features him standing with green-coated Charl Schwartzel with his hand on the champion’s shoulder. Mcllroy’s famous Tweet, which generated quite a stir during the Honda Classic Championship
when he touted Tiger Woods as “no more” and with Woods finishing fourth in the Masters earlier this year, maybe it’s time Mcllroy should hit the brakes on the wayward shots in his Tweeter account.
8. Hank Haney
Country: USA
Account: @HankDHaney
Fans: 12K
And then there’s Haney, Tiger Woods’ former coach, who saw him through so many majors. Haney made headlines earlier this year when he and Woods’ present coach Sean Foley, broke into a verbal bout on Twitter. Haney also takes the Q&A sessions with his fans
almost daily and is never afraid to speak out about his former pupil Woods.
9. Justin Rose
Country: England
Account: @JustinRose99
Fans: 48K
Rose does not Tweet as often as Haney or Poulter but has the credit of posting the funniest photo of all times. He took a picture of the bearded Lucas Glover, who hadn’t shaved for almost two years and titled it “Winning a U.S. Open -- so simple, a caveman
can do it.”
10. Paul Azinger
Country: USA
Account: @PaulAzinger
Fans: 33K
A major winner, a news analyst, a Ryder Cup captain and now a Twitter addict. Azinger uses the account more for political leverage and is perhaps the most talkative person. His best photos of all came out last fall when he was engaged in a Twitter fight
with Mcllroy and replied with one of his photos with a large grin on his face while polishing the Ryder Cup. Mcllroy had to reply with, “Mr. Azinger, you are one up”.
Apparently, the Long-Hitter John Daly has also doubled his Tweeting frequency in the recent times and like his tumbling-out-of-the-winebottle career off-course, he might just be making the headlines by adding another addiction to the already long list. For
the moment, he has some catching up to do to feature in the Top 10.
The social networking sites like Twitter are playing a vital role in bringing the celebrated and often reclusive players closer to their fans. This also gives the fans an insight into the lives of their heroes, providing the sport that spicy blend which
it has always lacked.
