Golf’s greatest, Mario Camicia passes away at 70
Mario Camicia, who inspired thousands of golf fans with his commentary and remained an icon for years, has passed away. He was 70 years old.
According to the details, Camicia had to be hospitalized due to a chronic illness. He had a surgery last month, but later he was reportedly in a coma.
Often called "Mr Golf" by his fans due to his services to the sport, Camicia served as a commentator for over twenty years and also worked as the Tournament Director of the Italian Open till 1992.
The news of his demise sent the golf enthusiasts and analysts in deep shock, as Camicia had attracted a large number of admirers through his expert views on golf.
Beginning commentary in 1981, he worked hard and soon associated himself with main stream media.
His experience was with Mediaset--a prestigious television of Italy. Having gained massive fan-following in a short time, another well-known TV service, Telepiu took him on board.
Mr Golf was best known for his voice, as he knew how to grip the attention of the audience. Amazing presentation expertise was not the only factor that highlighted Camicia's ability, he also had a vast technical knowledge of the sport itself.
His commentary covered a wide range of issues from golf's technical expertise to players' profiles.
Moreover, Camicia was notable when it came to his country's golf. Working for the Italian Open boosted his interest in the sport, as he was already regarded as an avid fan of Italian players.
“Mario epitomised everything that was special about Italian golf,” said O’Grady.
“He was a fervent supporter, a tireless administrator and Tournament Director of the Italian Open, and for many years a great and passionate television commentator who contributed so immensely to the growth not only of all levels of Italian golfers but the whole European Tour”.
In addition to his participation in the Italian Open, he also graced the Ryder Cup with his keen interest. Camicia was glad when Italian Costantino Rocca grabbed the headlines after taking part in the Ryder Cup.
Rocca expressed his sorrow over the death of Camicia, stating that Italy has lost an icon that inspired thousands of fans and promoted the sport within the country.
Another great Italian player, Edoardo Molinari, said, “Mario was one of the most influential people of golf in Italy”.
