Golovkin speaks about Nov 13, Super Six, middleweight division
Following the recent controversy regarding the World Boxing Association (WBA) determination of a ‘regular’ middleweight champion, interim middleweight titlist Gennady Golovkin (19-0, 16 KOs) has decided to drop a dispute with WBA rated No. 2 Hassan N’Dam
N’Jikam and No. 3 Avtandil Khurtsidze to appear on the Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito November 13 undercard.
Golovkin confirmed in a recent interview to Naringe.kz he would be appearing on the HBO pay-per-view undercard, which will include Kelly Pavlik and Cuban prospect Guillermo Rigondeaux. Afterwards he will fight in Kazakhstan on December 16 to appease his
home fans.
As well Golovkin was interviewed about general boxing developments including Showtime’s Super Six tournament and the middleweight division. When asked how he felt about the injury-plagued Super Six tournament, he said: “Personally, I don’t watch those fights
and I think this tournament is useless. On my mind, Lucian Bute did the right thing by not taking part in this competition.”
Golovkin possesses a spectacular amateur record and is the only fighter to have ever knocked out current super-middleweight IBF champ Lucian Bute.
Acknowledging competition is stiff in both the middleweight and super middleweight divisions, Golovkin said he has no aspirations to move up to super middleweight for the time being to challenge former Olympic rivals Bute and Andre Dirrell (both of whom
he beat).
Golovkin said he is hungry to take on all current champions in his division, but believes that Paul Williams, a two-time former WBO champion, is the best middleweight in the world right now and would like to challenge him.
An opponent for the November 13 undercard has yet to be announced.
Golovkin’s last fight was against Milton Nunez for the WBA interim title. He knocked Munez out in the first round, establishing himself as a top middleweight contender.
