Gonzalez/ Kas stun the duo of Melzer/Petzschner in the third round – Australian Open 2012
Seeded at number 12 in the men’s doubles draw, the Mexican-German duo of Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas overwhelmed the fifth seed pair of Jurgen Melzer from Austria and Philipp Petzschner of Germany in the third round of
the Australian Open on Monday. The contest was played on the Show Court 3 of the Melbourne Park in Australia, with Gonzalez and Kas winning in straight sets, 7-6(1), 7-5, to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam event.
It was a pretty exciting contest, with Melzer and Petzschner posing some decent resistance before eventually submitting in the second set. The 12th seed duo bettered its opponents in every segment of the game and kept
cruising through the sets to claim a well-deserved victory in the end. Gonzalez and Kas kept the games short and professional, amazingly winning 40 out of 48 points on their first serve to drive the fifth seed team out of the tournament convincingly.
No serve breaks were seen in the opening set, with the two teams sticking on to their serves to keep the score board ticking on even terms. Gonzalez and Kas coughed 8 unforced errors in the opening set but kept winning crucial
points on regular occasions to remain neck-to-neck in the set. A tie-breaker round came into play with the scores levelling at 6-6. Melzer and Petzschner utterly failed to deliver in the decider and could pocket merely one point before gifting the set to their
opponents at 6-7(1).
Gonzalez and Kas finally stung the first serve break of the in the third game of the following set, only to be broken in the very next game to fall back to 2-2. A regular game took the scores to 5-5 and it appeared as if another
tie-breaker round would come into play but Gonzalez and Kas had some other plans. A crafty manoeuvre from the 12th seeded duo earned it a break point in the 11th game, leaving them to serve for the match at 6-5. Gonzalez and Kas comprehensively
wrapped up victory at 7-5, marching in to the quarter-final round of the Australian Open with conviction.
