Gonzalez/Lipsky knock down Guccione/Matosevic in the first round – Farmers Classic 2012
Top seeded Mexican-American duo of Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky cruised to the next stage by beating Chris Guccione and Marinko Matosevic of Australia in twin sets 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round of the Farmers Classic in Los
Angeles.
Gonzalez and Lipsky required just 54 minutes to undo their opponents in an easy match on Wednesday.
In the first set, both teams held their opening serve to square off the score at 1-1. Gonzalez and Lipsky broke their Australian rivals in the third game and won their following serve to take a 3-1 lead. Guccione and Matosevic
struck back in the sixth to even out the proceedings at 3-3. Gonzalez and Lipsky hit another blow in the seventh game and this time they did not allow the Austrian pair to make a comeback, closing it 6-4.
The Mexican-American tandem banged in one ace and made equal number of double fault. The 40th ranked combination kept their first serve percentage at 72 and converted 16 of the 18 of them into points. Gonzalez and Lipsky
could not fare well on their second deliveries and first returns, losing four of the seven and 14 of the 19 points on them respectively.
Gonzalez/Lipsky and Guccione/Matosevic made a steadier start in the second set, as none of the two teams allowed the other to break serve in the first four games, taking the score to 2-2. The Mexican-American combination stung
a break in the fifth one and consolidated on it to move ahead 4-2. Serving for the match in the 10th game, they did not drop even a single point and won it 6-4.
The Mexican-American duo maintained a stunning conversion rate, securing 13 of the 15 first and seven of the eight second serve points. Gonzalez and Lipsky gave a pathetic performance on the second returns, as they were able to
claim just one of the seven points on them. However, they balanced with the help of better first reply showing, pocketing nine of the 20 points.
Gonzalez and Lipsky will meet Ruben Bemelmans and Xavier Malisse of Belgium in the quarter-finals.
