Gonzalez/Lipsky overcome Andujar/Mayer to capture doubles title – Winston-Salem Open 2012
Mexican-American combination of Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky captured their third team title by toppling Spanish-Argentinean tandem of Pablo Andujar and Leonardo Mayer 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 in the final of the Winston-Salem Open
on Saturday. Gonzalez and Lipsky needed one hour and 18 minutes to undo their opponents in a close contest.
Gonzalez and Lipsky made an ideal start, winning opening three games to build a 3-0 lead. Andujar and Mayer failed in pulling back the break of serve till the end of the set, dropping it 3-6.
Gonzalez and Lipsky banged in a couple of aces and 62 percent of the first serves, pocketing 13 of the 16 points on them. They also won most of the points on the second deliveries and returns, as he bagged seven of the 10 and seven
of the 12 respectively.
It looked like Gonzalez and Lipsky would close out the contest quickly, as they struck in the opening game of the second set and held their following serve to move ahead 2-0. Though, Andujar and Mayer broke back in the fourth game
to come on equal terms. Serving to stay in the set at 4-5, Gonzalez and Lipsky could not hold and lost it 4-6.
Andujar and Mayer neither hit any ace nor committed any double fault in the second set. The Spanish-Argentinean team gave a top notch performance on the second serves, converting nine of the 10 of them into points. However, they
managed to win just eight of the 17 on the first ones.
Gonzalez and Lipsky raised the level of their game in the match tie-breaker and became almost flawless, allowing their opponents to claim just two points and winning it 10-2.
Talking to the reporters after the match, a jubilant Gonzalez said, "I’m very happy to have won our second doubles title of the year and to be able head to the US Open with some wins under our belt. We are going to try to keep
improving."
Lipsky added, "It’s definitely exciting to win another title with Santiago. We’ve done pretty well together when we’ve played, so we’re looking forward to the rest of the year. Winston-Salem has been a great tournament. It’s one
of the best stops on the tour. It’s very relaxing, especially the week before a Grand Slam, to be able to come here and get as much court time as we need.”
Gonzalez and Lipsky had won their first title of the season at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships last month.
