Gonzalez/Lipsky overcome Isner/Querrey to reach doubles quarter-finals – Valencia Open 2012
Unseeded tandem of Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky registered a thumping straight sets victory against the American duo of John Isner and Sam Querrey in the opening round of Valencia Open on Sunday. The Mexican-American combination
took merely 57 minutes to wrap up victory at 7-5, 6-1, to book a place in the quarter-final round of the ATP World Tour 500 event in Valencia, Spain.
It was a relatively one-sided encounter, with Gonzalez and Lipsky dominating for the entire time. Isner and Querrey were expected to put up a far better performance than they actually posted. The American pair appeared to be in
no form and was seen all over the place. Their bleak baseline defence allowed their opponents to keep firing assertive winners on regular occasions and they utterly failed to register a single break point in the entire matchup. Gonzalez and Lipsky nailed three
out of six break points, whilst the American contenders frittered away the only break opportunity they have in the contest, eventually finishing on the losing side in the end.
The contest took off in a conventional fashion, with both teams holding their respective serves and dragging on the score line on even terms all the way to 5-5. Isner and Querrey dropped merely two points on their first serve in
the entire set but could craft a breakthrough to remain on their back foot. The only coveted break point conversion came in the 12th game of the opener from the Mexican-American duo  and the US tandem had to suffer a 5-7 loss to go down 0-1 in the
match.
Isner and Querrey couldn’t initiate the following set in a convincing manner and dropped their serve early. A series of forays from Gonzalez and Lipsky proved extremely devastating for the Americans and they dropped their serve
on two successive occurrences to let their rivals on top. Gonzalez and Lipsky eventually concluded the match with a breadstick, 6-1, marching into the round of eight at Valencia Open.
The Mexican-American combination will face either the duo of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo, or the pair consisting Marin Cilic and Andre Sa, in the quarter-final match later this week.
