Gonzalez/Lipsky plonk Marrero/Sa to reach final round – Winston-Salem Open 2012
Mexican-American tandem, Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky, slew the Spanish-Brazilian pair, David Marrero and Andre Sa, with a breadstick at the Winston-Salem Open 2012 on Friday. They jolted down a 6-4, 6-1 victory against their opponents to power into
the final showdown at the Wake Forest University in North Carolina, United States.
The in-form tandem of Gonzalez and Lipsky got the better of the Spanish-Brazilian duo in straight sets in their first encounter. After pocketing the match in 50 minutes, the Mexican-American pair comfortably booked a spot in the title-round at this outdoor
hard court event.
Gonzalez and Lipsky convincingly entered this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event. They swiftly bagged their entire serves without facing any breakpoint and cashed in the lone break chance in the last game to click the opener
with a 6-4 success.
Ranked 34th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Doubles Rankings, Gonzalez and Lipsky lifted their game in the follow-up set. After Marrero and Sa held their opening serve in the second game, the Mexican-American team went berserk and
reeled off the last five games. They were never threatened with any barriers and capitalised on two out of four break opportunities to pull out the set with a breadstick.
All in all, the Mexican-American pair spilled more double faults but manifested a better first serve share of 80 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 60 per cent. They also superbly marked 32 out of 36 points on it and ended the match with 53 points.
The Mexican-American collaboration captured their maiden year-to-date title at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships after dumping Flemings and Hutchins in straight sets. They then made a quarter-final showing at the Farmers Classic and reached
the second round at the Rogers Cup before entering this event.
Next up for Gonzalez and Lipsky is the Spanish-Argentinean pair, Pablo Andujar and Leonardo Mayer, in the final round.
The alternate tandem of Andujar and Mayer stunned the defending champions, Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, in straight sets. They notched up a 6-2, 6-1 score line after converting five out of eight break chances to their advantage.
