Santiago Gonzalez/David Marrero defeat Pablo Andujar/Carlos Berlocq 3-6, 6-3, 10-7
Mexican/Spanish pair of Santiago Gonzalez and David Marrero survived the first set scare to beat Spanish/Argentinean team of Pablo Andujar and Carlos Berlocq in straight sets 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 in the opening round of the Open de Nice
Côte d’Azur at Nice Lawn tennis Club on Tuesday. The Mexican/Spanish team needed just an hour and 16 minutes to oust their opponents in a tough contest.
Andujar and Berlocq needed a single break of serve in the first set to claim it 6-3. The Spanish/Argentinean pair delivered 69 percent of the first serves and won 72 percent of the points on them in the opening set. Andujar and
Berlocq converted one of the three break points they received and saved the only break point they faced in the first set.
Gonzalez and Marrero fought back in the second set, breaking their opponents in the sixth game and capitalizing on it to capture the set 6-3.
The Mexican/Spanish pair hit 65 percent of the first serves and grabbed the same percentage of points on them in the second set.
In the match tie-break, Gonzalez and Marrero claimed a couple of mini-breaks with the help of some fine intercepted volleys by the Mexican, winning it 10-7.
The Mexican/Spanish duo will play Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram of America in the quarterfinals. The Americans defeated Italian/Slovakian team of Andreas Seppi and Igor Zelenay in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 in the first round.
Dustin Brown/Travis Rettenmaier beat Tiago Fernandes/Benoit Paire 7-5, 6-4
German/American duo of Dustin Brown and Travis Rettenmaier prevailed over Tiago Fernandes and Benoit Paire of Brazil in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 to move to the quarterfinals. The match lasted for one hour and four minutes.
Both pairs held their serve in the first ten games of the opening set to tie the score at 5-5. Brown and Rettenmaier broke Fernandes and Paire in the 11th game and served out the set in the next game.
The German/American pair had an average first serve percentage as they hit just 50 percent of the first serves but their conversion rate was impressive as they succeeded in converting 81 percent of the first serves into points
in the opening set.
Carrying the winning momentum into the second set, Brown and Rettenmaier broke their opponents in the seventh game and claimed the set 6-4.
The German/American team improved their first serve percentage as compared to the first set as they fired 76 percent of the first serves in the second set, winning 74 percent of the points on them.
The unseeded pair will take on top seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares of Brazil in the quarterfinals. The Brazilians beat Denis Istomin and Rogier Wassen in three sets 6-7(5), 6-3, 10-5 in the opening round.
