Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño off to a confident start at the BMW PGA Championship – Golf News
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño started well at the BMW PGA Championship, despite the cold and wet conditions at Wentworth Club, on Thursday, May 23, 2013.
The Spaniard star carded a four-under par 68, in the opening round at Wentworth Club, to move within two strokes of the clubhouse leader James Kingston.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he said that the playing conditions were really difficult, especially due to the rain, hail and lightening – the poor weather conditions caused a 90-minute delay
on day one.
“It wasn't an easy day,” said Fernandez-Castaño. “I think we've been quite lucky at the end. I've been expecting worse weather than we had at the end, and I played nicely. We normally get warmer temperatures
than we had today, but I think it's been pretty much the same for everybody, so it's been pretty fair.”
“I just made a lot of birdies, made a lot of important putts, and overall very happy, because I have to admit that this is not a course I know how to play very well, so anything that's under par is always a good
score around Wentworth,” he added.
He got off to a confident start and made birdies on the second and the fifth hole. He then added another two shots on the eighth and the ninth hole, to slip down to even par score.
The back nine of the course witnessed him picking up some pace, and making a strong charge on the leaderboard, courtesy to his five birdies against a lone bogey. At the end of the day, he found himself sharing
the third spot on the leaderboard.
According to him, four-under par was a good score to start with, especially when it was a bit difficult to create birdie chances. He now believes that a little more effort will allow him to make a strong contender
for the top spot in the tournament.
Scott Henry, who graduated from the Challenge Tour last season to secure his European Tour card, also made a strong start on day one, by carding a four-under par 68, to join Fernandez-Castaño on the leaderboard.
