Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño pleased with his finish at the US Open – Golf News
Justin Rose was no doubt the man with huge smiles on his face on Sunday, when he defeated the top-notch field at Merion to secure his first major title victory at the US Open. However, there were other players too who celebrated
their good finishes in the tournament and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño was one of them.
The Spaniard star finished with a 72 on day four, to secure the share of the 10th position on the leaderboard, his best finish ever in a major championship.
Taking to the reporters after finishing his campaign at the Merion Golf Club, he said that he was really pleased with his overall performance in the tournament, especially for making the cut for the first time in the US Open.
According to him, he had complete control over his game throughout the week, which allowed him to post decent scores in difficult conditions – the playing conditions worsened after heavy rainfall during the first two rounds and
Rose was the only player in the field to avoid over par score in the tournament.
“I think I'm happy in a way,” he said. “I pretty much had the round under control every day. It's not that I had things get away from me, so I have to be happy - this is the first time I've made the cut [at the US Open].”
“I think I have to be happy. It is my best finish in a Major Championship, and especially on a really tough one like a US Open,” he added. “When you play a US Open, you know you're going to make bogeys, you just have to get away
with it …and that's exactly what I did.”
The reigning Open champion Ernie Els, in the meantime, started his final round campaign seven strokes behind the pace set by Phil Mickelson on day three.
After Els conceded a double bogey on the fifth hole, his challenge for the top spot appeared to have ended. However, he made a strong comeback by gaining shots on the seventh, 15th and the 17th hole.
He then ended with a bogey on the 18th. Despite finishing the round with a lost shot, he held the clubhouse lead for most of the afternoon, before slipping down to the share of the fourth position on the leaderboard.
Phil Mickelson, who held a one-stroke lead entering the final round, faltered for a four-over par 74 and finished tied for the second position in the tournament.
