Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño regains his form in Russia
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño fired a five-under par 65 in the second round of the KLM Open, and shared the second position, heading into the weekend, at the Hilversumsche Golf Club.
Scott Jamieson and Peter Hanson were the other two players, who posted the same scores and joined him on the leaderboard.
The Spaniard, who finished his round one with a run of two straight birdies on the final two holes, once again cheered his fans with a superb display of the game with his clubs.
He opened his account with a birdie on the fourth hole, prior to earning another two shots on the sixth and ninth hole.
The back nine saw him sign his scorecard with an amazing eagle and a birdie against a lone bogey for an eight-under par overall score. He now settles three strokes behind the leader Graeme Storm.
“I think I could have hit the ball better but my scoring was very good thanks to my short game,” said the Spaniard. “Overall I am very happy with eight under after two rounds”.
He looked really pleased to be back in form, especially when he was not enjoying a great touch in the past few months.
Right from the beginning of the 2012 European Tour season, he played a total of 17 events and recorded only two top-10 finishes.
It was a considerably disappointing track record for a player of high standards, such as Fernandez-Castaño.
While talking to the European Tour’s official website, he admitted that he was really disappointed to miss out the chance to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team this year.
This week, his looks forward to regaining his momentum at the venue that saw him record a victory in 2005.
“My year has been disappointing to say the least. I was in contention to get into The Ryder Cup Team but didn’t make it,” he said.
“I didn’t play well over the summer ... hopefully I can improve this second half, hopefully with a win, and maybe here. It is a course I like very much. This is one of my favourite courses of the year and one of the best”.
