Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño shoots a massive 61 to grab the lead in the Barclays Singapore Open
Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño pulled in a massive ten-under, 61 on the rain softened Serapong course at Sentosa Golf Club, to grab the lead by a whooping three shots at the second round of the latest Barclays Singapore Open.
A four-time European Tour winner, Fernandez-Castano utilized the advantage of a rain soaked turf right when play was resumed after a delay of few hours. His card boosted of a jaw-dropping nine birdies, a stunning eagle at par-five, 6th and just
one bogey in the front nine.
"I am thrilled as you don’t shoot 10 under very often," said Fernandez-Castano. "You don’t really know how the suspensions are going to affect you. I was lucky because yesterday I didn’t tee off before the thunderstorm. I took my time. I took it easy and
started well with three birdies. It was great and then I had a good start again this morning. I played well of course. To play well you need to hole putts and that is what I did."
Overnight leader James Morrison of England and Italian Edoardo Molinari are now trailing Fernandez-Castano by three shots after their individual rounds of 68 each. The duo shared the lead in the opening round of the event with rounds of 62 each. They played
the Tanjong course on Thursday, November 10 and the Serapong course on Friday.
A total of 80 players made the halfway cut which was placed at three-under, 139. Filipino Juvic Pagunsan shot into contention on the second round with his low score of another 66 to rest for an outright fourth, five shots behind Fernandez-Castano. Aussie
Danny Lee also utilised his vast Asian turf experience to surge up to joint fifth alongside Michael Hoey and Anders Hansen.
Top ranking Asian golfer Y.E Yang slipped to a disappointing joint eighth after a sloppy round of 71 on the second day. Playing the Tanjong course, Yang failed to keep up with the pace he had set for himself in the opening round where he shot a massive 63
to settle for second spot.
Third round play is suspended for the moment as the impending rains have swept both courses at the scenic Sentosa GC.
