Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano wins BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño stormed to a victory at the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi, after firing a 64 in the final round, to beat Garth Mulroy by two strokes.
Fernandez-Castaño remained consistent in his performance, right from the beginning of the tournament, as he faced a battle against some of the big names on the tour.
The Spaniard star was more than happy when he saw his name on top of the leaderboard, especially when he was a little disappointed about not being able to qualify for the European Ryder Cup team.
"Not making the Ryder Cup was disappointing,” he said. “I had a victory, two second-placed finishes and one third, and it hasn't been good enough. It's tough”.
"You have to play well in the big events, and that's what I didn't do this year unfortunately,” he continued. “I have talked to Olly about The Ryder Cup many, many times. I can laugh about it now, but it hasn't been easy”.
"I just needed to believe in myself and put The Ryder Cup out of my head, which I've done this week,” he added.
According to him, he tried not to think much about the Ryder Cup’s missed chance and focused on his game completely. As a result, he succeeded in putting pressure on his rivals and took the sixth European Tour title home.
Fernandez-Castaño got off to a perfect start on Sunday, as he birdied the first hole and surged to share the lead with Mulroy.
However, he lost the lead after making pars on the next six holes that he played, while Mulroy birdied the fourth and the fifth hole.
Starting from the eighth hole, the Spaniard recorded birdies on six of the next seven holes that he played and shared the lead once again.
On the 17th hole, Mulroy faltered and conceded a bogey. He followed it by a par putt on the final hole.
Conversely, Fernandez-Castaño kept his nerves under control and birdied the final hole for a two-stroke victory over his rival.
Gregory Bourdy and Matteo Manassero shared the third spot with a 20-under par tournament score.
