Gonzalo Higuain: Win over Auxerre was hugely important
Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has revealed how important it was for his team to pick up the win against French Ligue 1 outfit Auxerre was as they chase a 10th UEFA Champions League win.
The Spanish giants struggled to make the breakthrough. However, substitute Angel di Maria was able to make the difference, as he took advantage of some poor defending in the 81st minute to control the
ball on his chest and slam it into the back of the net.
Though the victory was a narrow one, the result means that Los Blancos are at the top of their group, having collected all six points from the first two games.
Argentina international Higuain said that the result was the most important thing, even if the victory was not quite the emphatic one as the club’s fans had been hoping for.
“We're happy, we have won two games now. It is a very important victory becaue Milan has drawn, it was a very difficult game. When they [goals] come, they will come. We are calm, they are moments that
happen in the career of a player and have to face it with calm," he told Spanish daily newspaper
AS.
Despite Madrid not quite living up to widely-held expectations that they would be an irresistible attacking force this season, they have built on reinforced foundations in their defensive line — strengthened
by manager Jose Mourinho— to enjoy an unbeaten start to the campaign in all competitions, shipping just one goal in the process.
Indeed, in seven games this campaign, Higuain has netted twice while his fellow forwards have also struggled. France international Karim Benzema has only scored once, while superstar winger Cristiano Ronaldo
has seen just two of his strikes end up in the back of the net despite his fearsome goalscoring reputation.
