Gonzalo Higuain insists that the goals will come
Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain has said the he expects to be back among the goals shortly, adding that he feels manager Jose Mourinho's full confidence at the club.
The Argentinian forward has enjoyed an outstanding scoring record for Real of late, having joined from River Plate in 2007. Since the start of the 2008 season, Higuain has scored 51 goals in 72 league appearances.
But Real has made a slow start to the season, collecting wins without capitalizing on the chances the team has created. Before Sunday's game against Deportivo La Coruna, Real had only managed to score six goals in five league games this season.
The team's 6–1 victory over Deportivo was therefore welcome, both for Real and for Higuain, who scored his second league goal of the season in the encounter.
"I was always calm. Last year, I was scoring," Higuain told AS about his start to the season. "The year before as well. I know the goals will come and it doesn't bother me. Before no chances were going in and now things change slowly. I must remain calm."
Aside from scoring from Angel Fabian Di Maria's cross against Deportivo, Higuain assisted Mesut Ozil and Di Maria's goals in the first half. Despite only having two goals to his name this season, the striker vowed to keep performing for his club even in
the absence of goals.
"A striker always promises goals. Hopefully, I can get a lot. Confidence for a striker it is always important. I hope to and must continue this form."
Higuain added that he feels the trust of new manager Mourinho, who arrived at Real this summer.
"His words [are] reassuring. It is very important support and I will continue working hard to restore that trust."
With 14 points after six games, Real is third in La Liga, while two European victories have the team top of Group G in the Champions League.
