Question:

Good, Safe Cat Collar?

by  |  earlier

So I have a cat that I choose to let outside (though I know many people think this is not a good idea) and I would like to get a cat collar for the purpose of making him look "owned" (he is a purebred and don't want him to be taken). I am not going to make his stay inside. I just want to know if there are any good collars that are safe and will release if needed but one that will not come off too easily.

  1. Thank you for doing your part to keep the cat population down by setting it loose and letting natural selection eliminate it.

  2. u could get ur cat a harness

  3. to me good, safe and collar is an oxymoron...never to be used in the same sentence...I never put collars on my cats and I always keep my cats indoors there are too many dangers out there that can happen to your Purebred cat such as diseases, being hit by a car, getting into a fight with a larger animal that will kill or maim him or just being poisoned, abused, shot by animal(cat) haters

  4. Keep your cat inside.  End of story.

I keep mine inside (I live in a city.) and he is also adorned with a collar and implanted with a microchip.  I know it isn't safe but my cat is ridiculously smart.  He can take off the release collars without any problem.  He slides his paw under and wiggles his head out.  If he really wants it off, he'll rip it in half.  I actually have a chihuahua collar on him.

  5. maybe you should find a HOME for this poor kitty, you are not doing your cat ANY good by letting it outside to die a premature, preventable, and probably painful death.

  6. Yes there are many cat collars avaliale on the market now that have a special release catch that can stop you cat from choking with the collar. I have seen them for sale at good, large pet stores and vet clinics. I purchased one over ebay.

They might be called breakaway collars but im not 100% certain on that. If you go to your local vet or pet store they should be able to help you.

  7. get a collar with a breakaway clasp or one with a elastic stretchy part in it.  I use these with my cats because while primarily indoors they go out on leashes and to the vets and I wanted something on them just incase they slip out the door or wiggled off the harness.

http://www.k-9collars.com/cat_collars.ph...  - these are personalized.  Also  spend the money and get your cat microchiped It does more then just identifies the cat.  Most shelters give cats 3-5 days and then euthanize them,  with a micro chip they will hold your cat till you come and call if they end up with her.

  8. personally, i wouldn't put a collar on my cat, as she has got stuck in them many of times. to me they are not safe.

just cause your cat has a collar on, doesn't mean someone wont take her, if someonee likes the look of her they will just take her, they are not gonna say 'I'm not gonna take her cus she has a collar on'. people steal pets sadly!

just make sure she is microchipped in case she gets lost.

  9. No, your cat should not be allowed to roam around outdoors unsupervised due to all the potential dangers, but apparently you already know this.

There are really no collars that are entirely safe for cats, even the 'break away' types. There are stories every day about how a cat gets strangled or hung by these things.
