I need a good bass for a good price, preferably under 200 bucks. Ive been looking at different squiers and a B.C. Rich Bronze Warlock 4 st. My friend, who knows just about nothing about basses, sais that squiers arent good (fender, of corse). What kind of bass should i get...i dont want to drive all the way out to the guitar store (Music Place in Berlin) and not know whats a good idea to get.

  1. Your friend is right about the Fender.

The world is full of frustrated ex beginning musicians just looking to, "get rid of the junk".  In this case, a bass guitar.

Look for ads in the paper or better yet ask your friends if they know somebody.  I own seven guitars.  Only bought one at retail.

  2.   Peavey makes decent basses for pretty cheap and they are usually set up pretty well.  Your friend is right about squires.  They are very hit and miss.  Some are ok while others are terrible.  The frets are generally very bad; they tend to jut out. I tend to think Peavey has the best bang for the buck.

Someone said to get a tube amp.  I wouldn't do that: they are heavy and very expensive.  If you were getting a guitar, then yes.  A good 100 or 200 watt solid state amp is good for just getting started.

  3.   Hi Matt. In my opinion, the  Peavey Millenium is a great bass to learn on.  Very fast and easy playing necks,  decent pickups, and they stay in tune very well.  Another factor with the Peavey is the quality is very good and consistent bass to bass in this price range.  Ive played Peavey Cirrus 5 and 6 String Basses for years now, and the quality and detail they put in these $2000+ basses carries over very well into the lower priced gear they make.

I also play Fender Fretted and Fretless Jazz Basses, and while those are fine basses, im not to impressed with the "Squire" line.  While I have played some very good  Squier Basses, seems they are very hit and miss on the quality and consistency of these instruments. (although, when you do find a GOOD Squier, its a very well made instrument for the money)  While the B.C. Rich Warlock sounds good and is a very playable bass, it is a very uncomfortable bass to play sitting down.  You might want to keep that in mind when purchasing.

Hope this has helped, and keep playing!

  4. Im sure you could just go on ebay.com

    or craigslist

  5. squier jazz basses are actually excellent, i use one, they sound and work gr8. It's just all that Get a tube amp, not a solid-state, Get a gibson, not an epiphone, Get a fender, not a squier. Squier is not a bad company.
